Protection on VX450W

Hi,

Recently a wire to the internal speaker on my case got dislodged and shorted, melting several wires and cables in the case. I discovered this when I smelt burning and found the room with my PC full of smoke. The PSU was a generic power supply with no protection. I purchased a VX450W to replace the generic PSU and am thinking of buying another for a second PC. I am more worried about my house burning down than any damage to my PC.

However, I've seen a few posts on this forum about wires melting when there's a problem - usually caused by a bad connector. What exactly is the protection offered by Corsair power supplies? Does the PSU not trip out if there is a short which is serious enough to melt wires and possibly cause a fire?

ATX spec should not post the system if a short is detected, however with the amount of power that is needed with todays systems a minor short like that when its not directly connected to the PSU may not be detected. It works in conjunction with the MB and PSU.

Thank you. Asus said the current from the mobo would be too low to cause a fire.

If there is an over-current/short-circuit situation in the output from the PSU, what happens? Does the PSU protection just stop it sinking current while the condition exists then continue working normally when the short/circuit is removed, or does the PSU set a fuse that needs to be reset before the PSU can be used again, or what?

I appreciate your help.

This is what I suspected. The PSU iteself will simply shut down when it or the board detects a short. Nothing on the PSU needs to be reset in order to function normally again when the short is removed, it will simply stay on and power the system, unless another short is found, in which case it will turn off.
