Twin2x4096-6400C5DHX OC question

Recommended Posts

Just ordered two packs of the 6400C5DHX "8gigs total". My question relates to its potential ddr2 settings. The motherboard I've chosen the Asus P5e lga 775 Intel x38 has a very user friendly Bios. It allows for setting memory to

ddr2 1067. My question is will this memory support this setting "stable" and if so what Voltage and Timings would I need to balance it out? I do have the dominator memory fan and a case with 4 fans and a vent so cooling is pretty good.

I've done quite a bit of reading although haven't had the guts to actually overclock anything yet so give me as much detail as possible please.

Are you asking if you can overclock 4 sticks of DDR2 800 to 1066?

If so, it's doubtful. It's normally recommended to underclock 4 sticks as the memory controller in most motherboard / chipsets run slower when under full load.

Why 8 GB though? Overkill for everything except for servers / intensive computations.

So would I get better performance out of Dominator 4x 1gigs than the 8 gigs I've chosen. Especially concerned with performance of turned based games such as Civilizations which are extremely detailed and become slow at turning in large maps once developed. I also run Crysis, World of Warcraft, Guitar Hero, and plan on running Warhammer.

If your just gaming theres no point in 4GB let alone 8GB. Running 2GB at DDR1066 will be plenty enough for Crysis. However, if your using Vista then I would get 4GB. It most likely wont speed up the games but the rest of your PC will be fast. It was for me anyway. I have one set of that RAM and it works great. OC'ed like a champ too.

I've decided to go with the Dominator QUAD2X4096-8500C5DF. 4 1 gig sticks higher quality memory and 1066 instead of 800. Looking forward to see the difference in ddr2 rating as I only ran ddr2 800 for 2 weeks before RMA'ing a few things. I'm still used to ddr2 667 on my current system. Thank-you for your comments helped alot in making my decision.

Might try a little oc'ing with these once I've got the system up and running I'll be sure to check with you guys before jumping into any settings. Here's a beginners question.

Is 5-5-5-15 timings good? If not what would be an improvement within reason? I'd rather not run lower than 1066 because the Asus motherboard i'm getting has some kind of feature for 1066 memory. I guess my question is, Can voltage be increased to improve timings or are Timings only improved at the cost of speed?

I have one pair (4gig) of this mem as well. I have a q6600, and was wondering how high you were able to get the FSB to running 1:1
