What do you mean by 'matched' pairs?

So here's my story. I recently built a new machine, complete with TWIN2X2048-8500C5D ram. After testing both modules together and separately in Memtest86+ I confirmed that one of the modules is faulty and will not run the advertised speed/latency. I currently have an RMA number and am ready to send the faulty module back. Here is my question: do I have to send both of the modules back? One of them performs perfectly at the advertised speeds? I noticed one poster being told that it is recommended to send them both back because they are 'matched'. What exactly does this mean? This situation poses a huge problem to me because with one module I can still use this machine, but with none obviously I can't until the new modules arrive.

I am sorry yes you should send both modules so the new modules both match. And Twinx sets and two modules built with IC's from the same lot and then tested together for best performance. However, sometimes they or one might fail its not uncommon and why they come with a warranty. We try our best to weed them out by testing on a MB at the rated speed but sometimes they still fail in the first 30 days if they will fail.
