New PC Build - RAM Questions

Hello to all. I am presently building a new PC for myself to use mostly for gaming. I have purchased an Intel Q6600 quad cpu, a BFG 8800 GTS 512MB and I am probably going to purchase a MSI P6N Diamond motherboard. I will be running Windows XP Pro (32 bit) and may upgrade to SLI after awhile with another 8800 GTS. I am totally undecided as far as what ram to buy. Since my last rig was an Athlon XP based system, I am unfamiliar with the newer DDR2 ram and the like. I know I want Corsair memory as I have used it for years and years with great results. Using Corsair's Memory Configurator I have narrowed down my choices to either TWIN2X2048-6400C4DHX or TWIN2X2048-8500C5D. (the 8500 is 3x the cost of the 6400 after rebate - big factor) I would like to be able to toy with overclocking the Q6600 abit. Nothing major as I will be using after-market air cooling. I believe the Q6600 runs on a 1066 fsb, does that mean the TWIN2X2048-6400C4DHX will not work being rated at 800Mhz? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks and good luck!!!

Thanks RAM Guy. I'll order my 8500 Corsair memory later tonight. I will be back often in a few weeks when I put it all together. I'll probably be asking for optimized timings and stuff then. I can't wait to see what some of my games look like with a new build! My present rig lasted almost 3 1/2 years and it is TIRED! Thanks again.

Hello again. After pricing out the remaining parts I need, I found myself abit over budget. The difference between the 8500 memory (around $170) and the 6400 ($55 after rebate) is alot to think about. Coming from nForce2 and DDR I am used to a fsb/ratio type of overclocking. I think I understand correctly that the cpu speed and the memory speed can be tweaked completely seperately on the 680i chipset.(?) Therefore I could still OC the Q6600 (GO stepping) to its' sweet spot and just see where the 6400 ram can go to, if I decided against the 8500, right? Sorry but this is my first new build in over 3 years and the newer tech is still confusing me, even after a ton of article and review reading. :sigh!: I guess in a nutshell, would the difference be noticeable enough to warrant the 8500 and can I still OC the cpu if I get the 6400? Thanks and again sorry for all the questions!!

P.S. I do game quite abit but I mostly play RTS and flight sim kind of stuff, not much fpshooters.

The difference between DDR100 and DDR1066 on a I680 MB would be about 2-8% in a memory bench mark at default settings so no it would be subtle. However, since you plan on over clocking I would suggest going with XM2S-8500 as you would have a bit more margin to play with when over clocking.
