pointman2007
Yesterday, I purchased Corsair TWIN2x2048-6400 (a matched memory pair of 1 gig modules - 2 gigs in total), yet when I installed them on my computer, my computer says that I only have 1 gig (it says this both in startup and in Windows). I am running Windows XP professional (32 bit), and my motherboard is the ECS Elitegroup P4M800PRO-M which is supposed to support up to 2 gigs of DDR2 ram. I though that perhaps one of the modules was either not seated right, or faulty, so I pulled one of them out to see what would happen. However, when I pulled one of the modules out, my computer said that I only had 512mb of ram. Thus, I concluded that my modules were faulty (512 instead of 1024) and I took them back to the store to exchange them. However, when I installed the new pair, I experienced identical results. I have already looked through the BIOS, but there is no settings which would affect my memory like this. Obviously, my computer is recognizing the memory because it is able to make it through POST and boot up just fine, but it isn't recognizing that my memory modules are both 1 gig modules. What do I do?
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 24, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 24, 2007 I am sorry but that MB will not support those modules according to the Sec Sheet. Please look up your system on our memory configurator.
pointman2007
I've looked on there before, and my MB is not on the list.
bigbuck08
The problem is that your motherboard doesnt support that speed. It will only support up to DDR533.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 25, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 25, 2007 Yes and I am sorry I would suggest using memory that was suggested by the MB maker if its not listed.
pointman2007
In response to Bigbuck08, the motherboard will actually support up to DDR2 667Mhz, but that shouldn't be a problem. Even though the memory I purchased is 800Mhz, it should automatically lower itself to 667Mhz. But, this still doesn't explain why each module is showing up as being only 512Mb, when they are supposed to be 1024Mb.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 26, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 26, 2007 Well I do not agree unless you know what you are doing, and our XM2S modules all have minimum Voltage requirements of 1.9 Volts or more on some parts and if that MB does not support that then it may not work. pointman2007
Do you mean that they wouldn't work at all, or just that they wouldn't work properly?

Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 26, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 26, 2007 Do you mean that they wouldn't work at all, or just that they wouldn't work properly? It may or may not work, but in this case it its not running properly correct?
pointman2007
The ram works in the sense that it functions perfectly as two 512Mb modules, but they are both supposed to be 1024Mb modules. Could a lack of power change how many Mb they appear to be? I do know that I can change the amount of voltage I give the memory through my BIOS. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 26, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 26, 2007 No, If you install just one module does it only see 512 Meg for either module? If yes then the MB and or chipset will NOT see the high density memory IC's used to make this module. We use 128 X 8 IC's and it would suggest that MB will only see 64M X 8 memory IC's. pointman2007
Ah, now we're getting somewhere! Yes, when I have only one of the modules installed, it only sees 512Mb.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 26, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 26, 2007 Then I am sorry it will NOT see the higher density IC's and they will not work with that system sorry!
RJLeong65
Ah, now we're getting somewhere! Yes, when I have only one of the modules installed, it only sees 512Mb. To add to what the RAM GUY said: There is absolutely no way at all whatsoever for most of the newer 1GB sticks of DDR2 memory to work properly on your system. Most recent 1GB sticks of DDR2 memory are single-sided -- but your motherboard, which uses an older chipset and memory controller, requires that 1GB sticks of memory be double-sided because it can only address a maximum of 512MB per bank (rank).
