JollyRogers
Morning; I have been running my build since about Feb06 with Zero problems. Then about 3-4 weeks ago when booting machine would not post. Solid beep for about 10 seconds a short pause then again. Well the thing is that once the box warmed up some to say 75F, letting it just sit there and beep!!! it would then post with ZERO problems. I thought power supply. I replaced it. Same problem. Only when cold. Well I verified memory settings and voltages. 5-5-5-15-2T @ 2.1V. I usually run it unlinked at 1066, but it runs fine linked also 1:1 @ 1066. I Tried adjusting the voltage a little up and down. Voltage monitoring says it is 2.10 when I have it set at 2.05. So I left it there, but it has been running set at 2.1 and bios volt readings showed it at 2.14V. The voltage regulation and monitoring on this board is not good... but all my voltages are set manually and read right. I then pulled the second 1G stick out of the second blue slot and left the 1G in the blue bank closest to the CPU. It posted right away cold. I switched the memory module and put the 1G I had pulled into the 1st bank closest to CPU. The machine would not beep or anything nothing! Zilch! So I put the original bank 1 memory module back in and it posted right away. Now here is the thing. I know the memory that was in the 2nd blue bank is bad because the it will not boot with it. Its on my desk right now. But why would the system post after a warmup with the "bad" memory in the 2nd blue slot, but not at all when in slot 1??? Also, howto RMA please unless you have further recommendations. I have original box. Do I RMA all the memory or just the 1 stick? This is main machine and having it down is not a real option. So I may have to buy "other" memory if both 1G sticks are in shipping etc. (I have never RMA'd memory before only video cards :) Thanks! bigbuck08
You would have to RMA both modules to ensure you get a matched set back. You might be able to do an advanced RMA. That means they will put a temporary hold on your credit card and send you new RAM. When they get your old RAM and verify its not working they release the hold on your card. JollyRogers
Arg!!! Not so quick  I just got home from vacation and the computer has been off for a week. Guess what? I left the "good" stick of memory in slot closest to CPU when I left on the 22nd... Got home and went to boot the machine and it would not post until after it had sat with power applied for about 10 minutes. Long beep pause long beep  Ok so I will head over to Asus's terrible forum and see what I can find over there. Will reseat the cpu I guess as a start and I am posting right now with both sticks back in. Appreciate the reply regarding RMAing them... but at this point I may just purchase a different MB (NOT ASUS).
JollyRogers
Ok, I updated BIOS to 1302 and it acted the same. I reseated CPU and verified for shorts on backside of motherboard by booting out of the case. I then reset CMOS and could no longer boot. I figured because it was defaulting to 1.8V for Mem voltage. So I bought a stick of 667Mhz to post with. It posted right off. (This PO's me cause I managed to get it to post when I built it with the 8500 in it just 1 stick). I Set voltages to 2.075 (it will read 2.12) and 5-5-5-15-2T for memory. Linked 1:1 @ 1066. Now for the fun. Put 1 Corsair 8500 stick into slot closest to CPU and it posted fine. Added second stick to the paired position and it would not post. Consant beep. Switched 2nd stick to slot closest to CPU. Would not post and no beep at all... Hmmm. OK took that stick and moved it to second from CPU slot. IT posted fine. Added other Corsair 8500 to matched slot and it posted fine. So I am back up with the Corsair Dominator 8500 back in, but they have been moved to slot 2 & 4 as a pair. The 1 & 3 Blue paired slots will work, but have become very finicky. I ran 3 passes of Memtest 1.70 when it would boot with the memory in 1 & 3 and just finished running 3 passes with it in 2 & 4, the difference being that it boots without complaint. I am guessing that I could RMA the board with ASUS, but the memory is fine. Thing is that it appeared to be a post problem wrt memory, but the bottom line is it is working now but I can't upgrade to 4G of 8500 if I wanted to (Compusa had a deal!). Thanks for the help RAMGUY. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 31, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 31, 2007 Sounds like some faulty DIMM slots. Let us know if you have any trouble with a different motherboard!
JollyRogers
Ram Guy, Well I took the memory route today and bought another kit from CompUSA since they have the "going out of business sale". Not a great price but a good price. I shutdown and let the system cool to see if the original memory would recreate the problem. It did. I cleared CMOS with switch/battery off/out and then installed new Corsair memory. It posted right away and went into BIOS and setup as per the sticker on the mem modules. Rebooted and ran 2 passes with memtest and then rebooted into windows. The second mem module that was in slot 3 I beleive is in fact bad and maybe both are. The weird thing is it only is a posting issue and once I get past that it is fine. I know the 680i boards are picky for memory... I will setup RMA. Since I actually bought more Corsair mem, I really don't need the new, but at about 160 for a 2G kit, I prob will piece together another system for the kids  just need a CPU, GPU, MB, and HD now :D: Thanks for your timely replies, help, support and all that. I just hope RMA peeps are as good as you.
