Mixing old W/New - what to do?

Hi all,

So the mobo is an Asus P4c800-E Deluxe.

Original build I put in 1 gig of PC3200XLPT.

A little while ago, I smoked one of the 512 sticks, got sent

a pair of CMX512 3500LL Pro.

Now, I want to max out the ram at 4 gigs, however I don't want to spend the money in replacing those 512's with 1 gigs as I only have 4 dimms to work with. So I will settle for 2 gigs, and max out at 3 gigs for the moment.

What do I use? Do the 1 gig chips NEED to be matched like the current 512's?

Can I put something better/faster than the "CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 438 (PC 3500)" I have been searching for?

FWIW it's a P4 - 3.0EGhz

Your input is appreciated:biggrin:

Ok, I was thinking about doing that. I was wondering if the 3200 versus the 3500 I have now will make a difference. I get it that with 4 gigs of ram it will be a much better performer, just the difference in 3200 vs 3500 is what I was wondering about. With my mobo will that 3500 number even be relevent?

thx

I can't even find the 3500 version.

Is this "old" ram? wheree can I find it? No one seems to have it in stock, most say discontinued. Gotta replacement pt. #?

Actually, there is no replacement for the 3500. You see, memory manufacturers and IC makers have largely abandoned DDR1 memory in favor of newer DDR2 and DDR3 memory technologies (neither of which is compatible with your motherboard). Eventually, the only DDR1 memory modules available from the major brands will be value series memory with high latencies.

Personally I would just keep what you have now and save your money till you upgrade the MB and get new memory then for the new system.

Because with that MB you cannot mix memory and if you use more than two module you may be limited to DDR333 at slower timings.

hmmm, well I do plan on passing this comp down to the kiddies, but it will be mine for maybe another year. Plus, I just upgraded the video card to an ATI 2600 because I am just getting back into flight simulation. And FSX is a pig, plus all the advanced aircraft and navigation systems are very pressing on almost every part of the system.

Others with a very similar system have had good results with a ram upgrade. My prior video card was geared more for video editing, which I no longer do (that much) anymore. So I don't mind throwing a few hundred here and their. To upgrade the mobo, means a new processor and a new video card, plus the ram. That's a grand right their, and I have a feeling my 450W PS will be maxing out, when that new 8800 GT goes in. So I decided to just tune this one up a little bit, and save my cash for an all new system next year. By then all the fancy eye candy will be reprogrammed in native FSX coding (versus just making it work now). Either way I know I have to get this think clunking along a little faster. 12-20 FPS may sound nice, but when clouds show up or a large major airport comes into view the frames drop...almost to the point of a crash, which has happened when I over do the sliders.

Anyway, are you saying my options are:

1, Stay with the TwinX 512's @ pc3500(meaning only 1 more gig max)?

2, Add 2 gigs of PC3500 (TwinX1024)?

3, Remove the 512's (@3500) and do 4 gigs of 3200?

Did I miss anything?

Thanks

A: NO that is not at all what I said, first thing the modules you have now are no longer available so adding to them be will close to impossible, you cannot mix memory with that MB and CPU.

My suggestion if you want to go to 2 Gig would be to replace what you have now with one Twinx2048-3200C2 set of modules for best performance.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok, thanks for explaining all that.

I recently installed a ATI 6200 that installs on my PCI slot.

If I was to venture into putting a new system together, what reccomendations do you have for processor / mb......and how much will that new 6200 vid card hinder performance because of the PCI (1 i think) interface? It's for flight simulation...thanks

I am sorry I cannot suggest one MB over another as it will cause a conflict of interest for me. However, I would look at XMS Qualification and Testing for the modules you have and then see what MB or MB's we use to validate the modules you have or will have would be where I would start. And I would get the fastest Processor you can afford that will be supported by the MB you choose.
