PeterV
Hi Ram Guy. Please refer my profile for system specs. I have 2 x TWIN2X1024-8000UL (4 x 512MB = 2GB) running quite fine at 800MHz 5-4-4-9 (2.2v), but for running XP x64 and Vista x64 I thought I would upgrade to 4GB. I installed 2 x TWIN2X2048-6400C4DHX (4 x 1024MB = 4GB), and got severe memory errors @ 800MHz with CAS set by SPD and 2.1v (SPD = 4-4-4-12). After reading some of your FAQs, I then ran it again, but at 533MHz with CAS set by SPD and 2.1v (SPD = 4-4-4-12) - with no RAM errors at all. The RAM passes MEMTEST+86 quite fine, also, so I think the problem is that the memory controller can't handle the 4 x 1GB, but is OK with the 4 x 512MB. I was contemplating putting in 1 x TWIN2X4096-6400C5 (2 x 2GB = 4GB) to get the 4GB and hopefully be able to run this at 800MHz 5-5-5-15 2.1v. Will I be better off, performance wise in XP x64 and Vista x64, with the smaller amount of faster RAM (2 x TWIN2X1024-8000UL = 2GB) @800MHz or with the larger amount of slower RAM (TWIN2X4096-6400C5 = 4GB) @800MHz. I mostly use Office apps, Internet, DVD Rips, Video editing (NLE using Adobe Premier, DV to MPEG2). Thanks for any advice or opinions.
DerekT
If you want RAM GUY to answer you, you need to post this question in the Compatibility Section. I am not RAM GUY but I think I can answer your question. You need to set the DRAM speed from 6400 (800Mhz) to 5300 (667Mhz) and set your Northbridge/MCH voltage up a bit by +.05v to hopefully achieve stability with 4 X 1024. It is achievable. Test with Memtest. Some boards will not work at 667Mhz, but many will. Yes, you would be far better with 2 X 2048 in both DRAM speed and system stability. I agree that 4 X 512 puts far less access and load on the memory controller as opposed to 4 X 1024. I would personally move to 2 X 2048 and by doing so, forestall any possible future issues. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 6, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 6, 2007 I would agree with DerekT go with one Twin2x4096-6400C5DHX for best performance.
PeterV
I would agree with DerekT go with one Twin2x4096-6400C5DHX for best performance. Thanks, Could you please recommend the optimum timings and settings related to RAM (or others) that you recommend for Twin2x4096-6400C5DHX running with the AW8-MAX and Pentium 940 EE 3.73Mhz?
