Bucksenator
Hey All I bought this computer.. Details in my tab anyhow, I bought it with 2GB of what I thought was the same memory.. It turns out, while they look the same, one GB is actually 3200c2 memory and the other is 4000. so they don't work on 1t command rate... I took out the 3200c2 and am running the 4000s on 1t command rate. is it better to run only 1 gig, in dual channel than it is to run all 4 on 2T rate totalling 2 GB? I play lots of games online, such as bf2142 and COD4, both are demanding games.. Thoughts?
Bucksenator
I actually just realized that my memory is not running in dual channel mode, It won't run with these settings either 3-4-4-8-1 vdimm:2.75 it will run it's default setting of 2-5-2-7-1 vdimm 2.75.. how can I get it in dual channel? will that make it so the timings I first posted will work? DerekT
Dual Channel Mode is a function of the on CPU memory controller. If you are not getting Dual Channel mode with the first and third slot being populated with identical DRAM, then you have issues. Test with both sets one at a time. Post your CPU-z Memory and SPD results with the set of 3200 first and then the 4000. Remember to set your DRAM in the first and third DRAM slots. Bucksenator
yes the 4000pros are in the proper color coded slots :D Is there a typical BIOS setting that designates dual channel or is it automatic? Where do I get this zspeed thing at? I'm half tempted to put all four 512 sticks back in, even though they are two different pairs, it runs faster than the current setup. DerekT
Is there a typical BIOS setting that designates dual channel or is it automatic?Dual channel is automatic. If the DRAM follows the parameters (and yours does) of identical timings and speeds, then Dual Channel is initiated. If, in a case such as yours, Dual Channel is not initiated, and the SPD timings/speeds are identical, then for some reason the CPU Memory controller does not like this DRAM. That is predicated on the fact that your previous DRAM did in fact, run in Dual Channel Mode. If this is the case then possibly your motherboard needs to be reset to initiate Dual Channel Mode. Do you know how to reset your CMOS settings?
Bucksenator
yes, I've already done the reset via a button on the board.. it didn't help.. I never was able to run dual channel so far as I know to this point.. I bought this used off a friend who had the following installed: 2 GB ram: 512 3200c2pro 512 3200c2pro 512 4000pro 512 4000pro he didn't know this obviously, and I didn't either only till I tried to figure out why it was not in dual channel mode. So I took out the older revision/model (3200 c2) and lined the 4000pros up in the proper slots 1,3 (they were 2,3 before) I figured I could achieve dual channel this way, and it would actually run better than the way I bought it. I might be wrong. It still only posts as single channel, after I clear CMOS and I Run z cpu it says I have an FSB of 201mhz Don't I need a 1:1 ratio ?? strange computer I have. You actually have a multiple of the LTD/HTT (Lightning Data Transport/Hyper Transport Technology). The multiple is at 5 * 200 = 1000Mhz. If you look at your CPU-z, you will notice the HT Link is at 1000Mhz so you are correct in that speed. Very likely your board should have been RMA'd when it was found not to run with Dual Channel. If you are still under warranty, then I would move to RMA of the board. It's not really all that important with AMD anyway as the HTT Link is Bi-Directional anyway. The FSB of Intel's was not and this was the reason why Intel created the Dual Channel Standard. AMD does not suffer Bandwidth saturation like Intel since they have their Memory Controller on the CPU. I would not look at canned benchmarks for speed. Test your FPS against systems such as yours and you will see comparisons that are real world. Canned benchmarks are theoretical and since you are not bandwidth saturated, they are just numbers. I would run with the 2GB and Memtest at 2.5-3-3-7. Then test your FPS. Bucksenator
I actually got it to post with all 4 sticks as dual channel with a freq of 201 mhz cool :D my timings are 2.5-3-3-6 and command rate 2t vdimm is 2.7 should I use yours and are they on a command rate of 1t? Just curious... cuz I will use the faster setup :D
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 4, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 4, 2007 If you have more than 2 modules 2t Command Rate would be suggested.
