8GB Voyager on Mac OS 10.4

So far, my drive has had much lower write speeds than specified. I'm getting about 6 MB/s for large files, and much less than that for small files.

 

I'm using a brand new 8GB Voyager in OS 10.4.10, on an Intel laptop.

 

(1) Would it help to format the drive to Mac OS Extended file system?

(2) Would doing that void my warranty?

(3) Is there anything else I can do to increase the speed?

2. No, as it's just a file format. You can just as easily format it back to FAT32 or NTFS.

3. Are you running it on a USB 1.1 or 2.0 port?

6-7 MB's is about normal for that product. But I would try and format it with fat32 from a command prompt with a windows system:

Please try to format the drive from a command prompt with this syntax:

Format (X:) /FS:FAT32 /U (X=the drive letter assigned to the Flash Voyager)

Thanks Wired, I have formatted it with HFS+. Unfortunately, it hasn't seemed to help much. And, yep, I'm using a USB 2.0 port.

 

Ramguy, from everything I've read, these drives are supposed to get 12 MB/s, possibly more. Could you direct me to where you found the 6-7 MB/s figure?

 

I'll try FAT32 and see what happens, but it looks like I may have to return this drive.

That is what it would be especially on a MAC the performance will not reflect what you are getting as they are done with Win XP. However, I have no problem replacing the drive if you like, please use the On Line RMA Request Form and we will be happy to replace it.
