BockVB
Kinda a strange story but here it goes: About a month ago I bought a vx450w and i hooked it up to my system, at first I thought I was screwed because it did not boot up. My cpu would turn on for half a second and then turn off everytime i tried to turn it on. However, when I was about to give up i pressed the power button and everything powered up, and it was working great EXCEPT for a clicking noise in the PSU. I lived with the noise for about 2 weeks until I decided to RMA it. I got a new vx450w last week, and guess what? It does the same thing that the old PSU vx450w did: my cpu will turn on for half a second and then it shuts down. I tried to jump it with green and black wire and the fan turns on for 3 seconds then stops, is this normal?? I heard about "Over Current Protection" but then why would my old vx450w work?? Yellowbeard
It sounds like you may have a short to your I/O panel or your case. Can you try posting the system with the MOBO outside the case and resting on a non-conductive surface? The MOBO box is always good. You can test it with just the CPU, video card, and memory. BockVB
thank you for your response, specmike, but before going through the trouble of removing my MB, does this have anything to do with why my PSU turns off after 3 seconds when I jump it with a paperclip? Is this normal?
Yellowbeard
When you are jumpstarting the PSU to test it, are you putting some sort of load on it? You need to put a couple of fans or something on it to give a load or it may shut off.
BockVB
Thanks for your suggestion specmike, I put some fans on it and it worked when I jumped it, and that seemed to kick it into gear because my CPU booted up after I connected everything again. And there is no clicking with this one! Hopefully all is well, knock on wood.
