runnerman943
My computer is having trouble with the ram I bought. The first problem I had was when I couldnt get windows to boot up when I install both sticks of memory, but it would work if I use just one. I tried this for both sticks and both worked just fine, but not together. I tried cranking the voltage up, and got them mildly stable at 2.1V. I them ran memtest86 for both the voltages of 1.9 and 2.1 without errors(had it running over night). I then ran prime95 and within 10 minutes I was facing the blue screen again( error 0x0000004e). I started to think that it was my mb because memtest found no errors. Next I ordered a 2gb pack of the same stuff off newegg. I ran that for 9hrs on prime95 with out any problems... I think this is a ram problem because the same type of memory ran without errors for prime95. Any ideas?? (also, ram was set to 5-5-5-12, and everything else in bios is default) xms2 2x512 6400, xms2 2x1g 6400 amd atholon 64 x2 3800 abit kn9s mb 400w powersupply
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 15, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 15, 2007 That would suggest you may have a weak PSU or the CPU is failing or there is some problem with the MB. Can you test them in another system?
runnerman943
I just tested the sticks on my brother's hp computer which runs the same type of memory (ddr2 6400) although they are just generic sticks. I got the blue screen at the same time as I did on my computer; about half way though vista start up. His computer is running the same cpu as mine also. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 19, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 19, 2007 I would recommend testing the modules one at a time. If both modules cause the same issues when tested individually then there may be another issue, however if you can find out if there is a particular module causing the issue, then we should get them both replaced. If you would like to get them replaced, please use the On Line RMA Request Form.
runnerman943
OK.... Its been awhile since Ive had time to work on the computer(with school and all). I tried testing the memory individually with memtest, ran them both through 6 passes with no errors. I can boot up the machine on either stick no problem, but cant run with both. All dimm slots are working, ran with one stick just fine. I checked the PSU for correct voltage with a multimeter and they were correct(although a little higher than my bios was showing). I wouldnt suspect that my psu would be the problem as I have all extra stuff unplugged. If it is my mother board, is there a way to test that? If all else fails I would like to RMA it, but I want to find the problem first before I waste money on shipping to find out it was a different component causing the problem. Thanks for all the help so far.
runnerman943
...something I forgot: flashed my bios to see if that would help, and it did, but it didnt fix it. I am now able to start up windows with both sticks, but when I run Prime95, It comes up with errors indicating hardware problems. Hopefully this can point us in the correct direction... Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 13, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 13, 2007 Try testing with both modules in the board in single channel configuration. If the system is stable in single channel and only gives you issues in dual channel, then the board may need to be RMA'd.
runnerman943
I have previously tried to put the sticks in the single channel mode and it performed the same as dual channel(I have tried all possible configurations). I have not tried it after the bios update though. I will try it again and respond.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 13, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 13, 2007 Normally if the modules will pass memtest individually, and you only have problems when using both modules at the same time, that would indicate either an issue with the PSU, MB, or CPU. When you get the new BIOS make sure you load setup defaults and then set the memory voltage to 1.9-2.0 volts.
