Corsair Survivor 16GB GT? (CMFUSBSRVR-16GBGT)

I ordered a Survivor GT 16 GB Stick online from a german reseller, but apparently he doesn't have this stick.

I can either get the 16 non-Gt stick with a rebate, or get a refund. I couldn't find the 16 GB GT on the Corsair website, so is this a new product or an error?

Error would be strange because a few online shop websites as well as some price comparison websites have the CMFUSBSRVR-16GBGT product listed.

Now i don't know if I should try to get the new product or if this was an error and I should get the non-GT version.

If i bought the non-GT version and the GT version would come out soon i'd be pretty pissed, so, is this an actual product or just a misunderstanding?

Can't find it on Corsair's site, but Google did indeed see it on a couple of german sites. I'm guessing it's a brand new product.

When you say you ordered it, but they don't have it, do you mean they are out of stock, or do not have it yet in stock, or they don't carry it at all yet?

I ordered the part, and paid by bank transfer, never heard of the shop again. After my third mail i was told they had been given the wrong sticks, the non-GT version and they couldn't get the 16GB GT anymore.

Strange.

Theres a shop having the 16GB GT version in stock apparently, but the picture they have has a blue sticker, which normally only the non-GT versions have apparently.

just a few weeks ago, there were several online shops in germany which had the stick available , but since a few weeks only one shop has it with an quite high price...

But I wonder if this device is reliable enought to install a complete encrypted portable linux workstation on it. If I read these post, I am quite uncertain about it...

Does the corsair gt product line has problems as soons as the capacity is >=8 GB? Is it really reliable as described in the specs?

No there is no problem with our drives that I know of, the thing you have to remember is that we sell a large volume of them (More than 250K per week) so the number of problems is rather small verses the number we are selling, less then about 2%.

And I would not suggest installing an O.S. on any flash drive.

what are your reasons for your recommendation to do not install any os on a flash drive?

From the technical point of view, usb sticks are comparably to the new ssd drives. If your specs (especially the gt series) are right, the maximum number of write operation can not be the reason. The read and write speed is also very nice for such systems.

Be aware of the fact that you are quite flexible with linux operation systems, you could minimize the write operations extremly by using tmpfs for areas like /var/log, /var/tmp, /tmp and so on...

It is also possible to backup a stick quite easily, just dd the whole stick to an file an an external harddrive...

From my experience I have to say an os on a flash drives is the fastet sys you ever got...

Most O.S. including Linux may require drivers be installed during the installation for proper operation, other wise they may not boot all the way to the O.S. But if you will be using the same MB and or system then I suppose it will be possible, but again not suggested. Not to mention the write speed of a flash drive some what more than a floppy but way less than a HDD.

RAM GUY, I think you do not give linux enough credit, just think about cd based system like knoppix and so on... they work on almost any hardware without modifications.

I made some tests with an quite slow and small noname usb stick and the speed is quite incredible. Because you do not have any access time... the raw speed might be slow but the acess time is almost zero...

Write operations are cached very effective, so this is not a real problem as long as you have enough free ram. You won't recognize any slowdown during normal operations...

You might want to check this howtos...

BUT the main question is, I do not see any german dealer whos sells the 16gb gt stick... could you give me some hints?

Again, its a suggestion not that you cannot do it. If you want to run from a flash drive then by all means go for it. But it is not suggested or supported officially. And we have only just started production, so I do not know the time frame for them to filter into the channel. But I can tell you I have not seen a working sample yet. You can send a email to info@corsairmemory.com and ask if they know if and when a reseller will have them in Germany.
