lagges
Hello, I'm planning to buy the Corsair USB STICK 32GB VOYAGER for backup purposes. I'd like to make sure that the stick fits my needs, so my question is: How much free disc space can effectively be used? Google tells me that there's about 7% loss, so I hope to have at least 28 gb free disc space on a formatted drive.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 9, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 9, 2007 I have not done the exact math on a 32gb drive but, see if the info here answers your question. I can't say if 7% is an exact figure or not: http://www.houseofhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53299 This discrepancy comes from a few different places. First of all the industry-standard definition of a megabyte (MByte) for flash devices is one million (1,000,000) bytes, where the operating system uses two to the twentieth power, or 1,048,576 bytes. Similarly, for a gigabyte (GByte), the number is 1,000,000,000 and 1,073,741,824 respectively. Second, as with disk drives, on flash devices there is small amount of overhead involved with formatting the device. The combination of these two factors causes the operating system to report the slightly reduced number of available bytes on the system.
