Ja5
I received a replacement 8GB voyager after I lost the ability format my old one that ran faithfully for about a year. (Luckily I had backups of my data) Going through the RMA procedure I received one, brand new in the package in about a week and a half. (not bad) I have immediately encountered issues. The very first thing that I noticed when I plugged the new drive in is that the LED stayed on steady for a few seconds and then went out. I then went to disk management to see it the drive appeared which it did. I then was able to change the drive letter, as I have a lot of network drives mapped, to X. I did notice that the selection to delete partition was grayed out (I am running with admin privileges). With the drive letter changed I then opened up the drive to see if I could create a new folder. No go. “Unable to create the folder ‘New Folder’ The system cannot find the file specified.” Info bubble from the task tray: Windows – Delayed write failed. Strange… I then went back to disk manager to try and format the drive. It runs through the format process to 100% then comes back and says “The format did not complete successfully”. Not good. I then switched machines and ran a 98 boot disk to use FDISK to blow away the partition. It says that Primary DOS partition has been deleted but upon escaping out of FDISK I get “Error writing fixed disk”. Booting to Knnopix 5.1.1CD. on secondary machine. Mounting /dev/sdb1 (vfat). Action available to change read/write mode??? Changing to writable. Able to create a folder. Booting back to XP Pro. Exploring drive. No new folder. ??? Trying GParted Livecd. Deleted Partition. Creating new NTFS partition. Applying. Deleting fat32 7.56GB…. waiting…. 11:09…no activity from LED…11:11… “An error occurred while applying the operations” GParted cannot see the device anymore. I’m stumped. I’ve tried these steps on several different machines at my home and at work. (using diff USB ports on each to no avail) I would hate to think that I have received 2 faulty products from Corsair as I hold them to be a premium manufacturer and readily recommend them to my friends and family. Any advice, help!
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 8, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 8, 2007 In some cases, Windows may not assign a drive letter correctly on a system with multiple network and/or virtual drives. I would try a command line format on a different system using the following syntax: Format (X:) /FS:FAT32 /U (X=the drive letter assigned to the Flash Voyager If that fails, try the method in the sticky post above, "FLASH DRIVE WON'T FORMAT". Ja5
I ran a format from the command line on two machines. Here are the results: Machine 1 Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] © Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:\>Format X: /FS:FAT32 /U Insert new disk for drive X: and press ENTER when ready... The type of the file system is FAT32. Verifying 7743M Invalid media or Track 0 bad - disk unusable. C:\>chkdsk x: The type of the file system is FAT32. Volume CORSAIR created 9/21/2007 4:12 PM <-- Interesting… before I received drive Volume Serial Number is 5C11-91C8 Windows is verifying files and folders... File and folder verification is complete. Windows has checked the file system and found no problems. 7,914,364 KB total disk space. 7,914,360 KB are available. 4,096 bytes in each allocation unit. 1,978,591 total allocation units on disk. 1,978,590 allocation units available on disk. Machine 2 Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] © Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:\>format e: /fs:fat32 /u Insert new disk for drive E: and press ENTER when ready... The type of the file system is FAT32. Verifying 7743M Invalid media or Track 0 bad - disk unusable. C:\>chkdsk e: The type of the file system is FAT32. When you refer to the post “FLASH DRIVE WON’T FORMAT” You mean this one right? http://www.houseofhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=62742 If references the deletion and recreation of partitions and then reformatting. Correct? If so I have gone through that, detailed in my previous post.

Octol
I received a replacement 8GB voyager after I lost the ability format my old one that ran faithfully for about a year... I could make almost the exact same post: same drive, same formatting problem, same results and error messages. (I've already received a new drive replaced under warranty.) Based on the above post, I'm going to guess that this is not an isolated incident; now I'm afraid to try and reformat the new drive with NTFS. Any new information on this problem?
