teh_moab
I recently lost my BIOS information and had to reconfigure it. I have now noticed that I am unable to run my Corsair TwinX XMS 3500LL Pro (1GB x 2) at anything other than 266MHz @ 2-2-2-5. The motherboard reports a "System failed memory check" error if I even set it to 400MHz regardless of the voltage I supply. I can get things booted and running for awhile at 333MHz @ 2.5-3-2-6 but eventually it will hard lock. My current config is in my profile. I have everything currently at the default voltage. I have tried setting the CPU make to defaults and everything, but I just cannot get the box to POST with the RAM at 400MHz. The RAM is in the blue slots for "Dual Channel". I would appreciate any advice that you can give before I go though the RMA process. Thanks!
teh_moab
I just tried booting with a single DIMM set to 400MHz and it still fails to POST. I get the same "System failed memory test" from the ASUS voice reporter thing. I did have the single DIMM in Slot B1 as indicated in the manual for single DIMM operation. The motherboard was RMA/replaced about 6 months ago and the PSU was replaced about 3 months ago. Should I try the Beta BIOS?
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 6, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 6, 2007 Your current bios should be fine and for now, with these symptoms I would not recommend a flash. Do you know why your bios information was lost? Your issue does not sound like the memory is causing it. To test the memory, I suggest that you clear the CMOS and then load optimized defaults and set the Dim Voltage to 2.75 volts and then set the timings to 2,3,2,6 and 1T command rate and then test the modules one at a time with http://www.memtest.org ! Please allow memtest to run 2-3 passes on each module. http://www.corsair.com/_datasheets/TWINX2048-3500LLPRO.pdf
teh_moab
I guess I worded the lost BIOS thing a little inaccurately. I tried pushing the CPU too hard and had to reset the BIOS. My A8N-SLI does not have "Optimized Defaults" that I can see anywhere. I have "Setup Defaults" which I tried this morning along with 2-3-2-6-1T @ 2.75V and it boots with 266MHz/Dual Channel speeds(Saw your previous posts about these settings). I did start MEMTEST but I stopped it after thinking that I should still be able to see 400MHz from the POST and not 266MHz. Shall I let MEMTEST go with the 266MHz speeds? Thanks! Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 6, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 6, 2007 That board and CPU should run the CPU/memory at 200/400. Please set the RAM speed and CPU speeds manually and test each module individually as noted above.
teh_moab
It will not POST with the CPU/RAM manually set to the "correct" speeds using a single DIMM as I previously mentioned. I get the "System failed memory test" error. This kind of stinks because I don't have another machine that I can try the RAM in and I hate RMA'ing things when I am unsure of the problem. Oh well... Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 7, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 7, 2007 If both modules are giving you the same issues when tested individually at their tested settings, then that would normally indicate a different issue than the memory, however you cant be sure unless you are able to test the modules on another system. teh_moab
Since 400MHz is a complete no go, I decided to run MEMTEST on the modules individually at 333MHz (2.5-3-2-6-1T) and they both fail on different parts of the test. I even tried pushing them to 2.8V and have the same issue. The funny thing is that I tested at 266MHz and they didn't error. So I'm really confused?!?! Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 8, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 8, 2007 Please make sure that you have disabled Legacy USB Support in the bios while running Memtest on ASUS MOBOs. The test conflicts with this setting.
teh_moab
Please make sure that you have disabled Legacy USB Support in the bios while running Memtest on ASUS MOBOs. The test conflicts with this setting. Yup, it was disabled.
Legend
If a memory module is defective you should get consistent errors at the same EXACT ADDRESS, everytime you run the test. If the errors jump around would direct to either a defective motherboard or CPU. In this case it would be mor elikely the CPU since the memory controller is located on the CPU for AMD socket 939. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 9, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 9, 2007 If both modules are failing there is most likely some other issue (MB or CPU) however if you would like to try getting the memory replaced, please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part! Or “Tech Support Express” and we will be happy to replace them or it, please note that you are posting from the forum!
