B33M3RBOY
Recently while running my computer, I have had random freezes, restarts and shutdowns. I decided to run memtest+86 1.7 and see if problems came up. I took these screenshots of my results. During the some test with the dominators, the computer would get a "unexpected error-halt" warning in grey show up that would freeze the computer. Every memtest I ran with the dominators would either freeze or fail. I believe my ram sticks have gone bad again. When I switched my ram back to my 1GB kit of Corsair XMS2-8500 ram it passed 5 times with no errors. Here are some screenies of my results running memtest. The only one that passed was the XMS2 test, so I know my problem isn't my CPU or Motherboard. http://www.picturehosting.com/gallery.php?u=B33M3RBOY&g=Dominators Can we RMA this kit RamGuy? Sorry I ended up posting this in the wrong area of the forums.
DerekT
If you are having sticks "go bad" in succession, then I would say that you are performing poor oveclocks and are damaging the DRAM. You will get RMA but you may consider driving less voltage through the DRAM as well as cooling the DRAM better when you overclock or you will no doubt be back again. B33M3RBOY
I tested the replacements when I received them and I got them 24/7 Orthos Stress stable at 4-4-4-10@962mhz on 2.2v. When I ran my FSB at 333mhz, I had the dominators running 1000mhz@4-4-4-12 on 2.2v stable. These went bad on 4-4-4-12@962mhz on 2.2v with a 385FSB. The case is very well air cooled in a Thermaltake Armor case with a 25cm side panel fan, 2x 120mm front fans, 1x120mm rear fan, 1x90mm rear fan, 1x90mm top case fan (All upgraded silenx high CFM fans). I know my temps are not the problem. I've touched the ram hours into stress tests before and they are always cool to the touch. I don't get what is going wrong. I think its my motherboard and the dominator micron D9's. I have the i975x Asus P5WDG2-WS Pro (bios 0805). Perhaps they just don't mix well. The XMS2 Kit I have can run the specs of 1066mhz@5-5-5-15 on 1.9v. Give them 2.2v and I can run 1150mhz. They ran great with this board. I've never been able to get the Dominators stable past 1066mhz@5-5-5-15 on 2.2v. I had my XMS2 PC8500 1GB Kit running 1150mhz@5-5-5-15 on 2.2v for over a year without any problems before I purchased dominators. That kit had been rock solid the since I've had them. Both Kits of Dominator 8500 ram I have had died in 3-5 months. I hope I've just had bad luck with the Dominators to date. Regarding the RMA, if I give back Micron Dominators, am I getting back the same or the Qimonda version? I ask because I plan to be purchasing a Asus X38 P5E-WS board around the same time the Penryn CPU's become available in the near future and would rather have the microns because I've heard they are better overclockers. B33M3RBOY
I previously had the v1 micron 8500C5D dominators but one of them went bad and I sent them both back to recieve a matched pair. I got back the v2 Qimonda chips. I must say i am quite disappointed in the performance of these qimonda chips. The microns handled higher frequencies > 1230 mhz @ 5-5-5-15, and lower latencies 4-4-4-12 @ 1050. These Qimonda chips would not even do 950 4-4-4-12 no matter what voltage applied. 800-900 was possible but not over 900 mhz, giving the micron 150mhz more headroom. Also the qimonda would only do ~1130 mhz and not be fully stable. Because my processor is overclocked and my current ram sync options are 980 and 1171 at 1:1 and 4:5, i either can't boot at 1171 and have to settle for CAS 5 at 980 :( Disappointed. These chips should not have made it into the Dominator series. It's a waste of heat spreader. This is what I found. If I received qimondas back, I could go from CAS4 to CAS5 at 962mhz. The rev1.2 I have were stable to 1030mhz@4-4-4-12 on 2.2v.
DerekT
Micron is not making anymore D9's. They are now focussed on creating and fabbing DDR3 with regards to high performance ICs. There are still Micron chips around, but no more are being fabbed.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 5, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 5, 2007 I am sorry but, we cannot guarantee IC versions on an RMA on a TwinX kit of memory. When you are running Memtest, are you disabling Legacy USB Support in the bios? This setting can cause issues with Memtest on ASUS MOBOs. Also, can you tell me again what revision your modules are? B33M3RBOY
The sticker on the ram says CMS2x1024-8500C5D, XMS8505v1.2. The packaging says TWIN2x2048-8500C5D G. I believe legacy USB was disabled, I would need to double check.
B33M3RBOY
Srry it took awhile to post this. Been really busy with work lately. Disabled Legacy USB and got different results. Still got errors at stock timings. When I reduced my overclock back to stock settings, the computer froze halfway into the post on the first reboot. Ran a test at 1066mhz on 5-5-5-15 with 2.2v and it failed. Ran a test at 999mhz on 4-4-4-12 again with 2.2v and received the same results. The ram should have been able to run 999mhz with tested settings 24h stable on Orthos Stress Blend. Here are images of the results. http://www.picturehosting.com/gallery.php?u=B33M3RBOY&g=Memtest-on-Dominators ps. In one image it says the test ran for 422 hours. This is a mistake that resulted after 30-50 seconds into the memtest. RMA time again sadly.......and I also need to reinstall windows again....:[pouts: I now get an error with explorer.exe and a couple other processes that loops over and over without me touching a thing. B33M3RBOY
Well ramguy, what do you think? Are the sticks bad? Shall we do a RMA?
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 12, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 12, 2007 The Intel I975 chipset was not rated for DDR1066 and from what I have seen most MB's even the ones that would over clock well will top out about 1030 Mhz for memory, but I would not expect these to run much over DDR800 at Cas 4-4-4-12. I would try and set the CPU to default and set the memory frequency at DDR800 and set the timings to Cas 4-4-4-12 at 2.1 Volts and see if you still get errors with the modules if so please test them one up and see if its just one of the modules that is failing
B33M3RBOY
Ok I will do that test in a bit. The Asus P5WDG2-WS Pro i975x board I have is stable overclocked at 1000mhz on 4-4-4-12 with the ram. I currently have my 1gb of XMS2 PC8500 ram 1066mhz running at 1110mhz with 5-5-5-15 with 2.2v. Both kits only received 2.2v, but I should admit on this board, 2.2v in bios shows up 2.25v in windows. I have to turn the mch voltage up (1.8v I believe) to achieve 24h stability. MB temp max is 33c. What micron chips do the 1gb XMS2 PC8500 kit use. I got the ram early in its release. I cannot tell you the revision number as I have a warranty sticker over it and the warranty I have through my local vendor is void if I remove it (they would replace the sticks faster). The i975x P5WDG2-WS Pro seems to prefer them compared to the ones in the dominators, even though the dominators can potentially clock higher. B33M3RBOY
Failed at 4-4-4-12@800mhz timings on 2.2v. Tested the sticks one by one. One sticks good, one sticks bad. I already recieved a RMA number. Thanx for the help.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 14, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 14, 2007 NP Please let me know when you get the new modules and Revision 1.X of XM2S-8500C5 would be Micron D9 and 2.X would Quimonda.
