2gb Voyager partitioning problem

I've got a 2gb Voyager that I'm trying to set up with TrueCrypt and dual partitions.

I'm using the "Corsair Flash Voyager Utility" to attempt the partition creation but I consistently get the "Format disk fail!" message. I've tried many different sized partitions (via the slider) with the same results.

The drive will format successfully with the Utility's Format button for a single partition the full size of the drive. Format is also successful with both the "format x: /fs:fat /u" command and the "Corsair EzRecovery Utility."

So my questions are:

1. Is there another way (short of linux and Win98 boot discs) to partition a flash drive? Shouldn't there be some generic partitioning utility available by now?

2. Does this behavior, i.e. formatting successfully but failing to partition, warrant a RMA request?

Thanks.

If you have a older drive the Corsair Flash Utility may not run properly with that drive. Did it come with the Flash Drive or did you down load it?

You can search for a utility to partition the drive at http://www.snapfiles.com or http://www.google.com.

I would suggest using a win9X Boot Disk and set the Flash Drive a boot able drive in your BIOS but boot from the Win9x Media and Fdisk and format the drive that way to make its bootable.

There's a good chance that I downloaded the utility. I've gone through this exercise successfully before with a 1gb Voyager purchased at the same time as the 2gb I'm working on now.

Both drives were purchased from NewEgg 10/25/06. Would a 1gb and 2gb use different tech such that the 2gb would fit your definition of an 'older drive?' I'm at a bit of a loss as to how partitioning worked before but not now.

Incidentally, I did try the Win98 boot disc method and successfully got two partitions on the drive. They were both readable in the 98 environment. But back in XPsp2 only the primary partition (not the extended) was visible in explorer. Both partitions were listed in the Disk Manager but trying anything (only reformat & change drive letter are available) gives the error "... the partition or volume is not enabled. To enable... restart the computer." Which, of course, does not help.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

That's disappointing! I called the tech support number as advised and the agent said it won't work, "we don't support partitioning on any of our drives." He explained that the 1gb model used an older controller and none of the newer tech, GT or otherwise, supports partitioning.

Is that what you meant by "help?"

Does anybody else have a success story to share? How do you get a flash drive with two partitions working in XP?

If you are trying to use a newer drive with older software then I am sorry that will not work and I think what he was trying to explain is that we do not offer a partitioning utility for our Flash Drive's. But you can still use a Win9X Boot floppy or CD and partition and format the Flash Drive.
