nikeportugal
So i had to a buy a new power supply for my new system and I read a lot of good things about Corsair's HX series from silentpcreview.com Yes.. I'm a silent nut.. So I heard it was really quiet.. and also I bought an HX 520 or whatever it is for my buddies system build a while back and it sounded really nice.... nice and quiet.. So ok I get the Power Supply in and hook it up to all my components.. and everything sounds kinda quiet except for high pitched noise on start up.. then it didn't start.. Which happened to my other PSU but it had less power and didn't have 2 PCIE connections for my 8800GTX.. So I just turned the power switch off.. and back on again.. and it worked and booted up.. Sweet.. so it sounds pretty nice and quiet.. all I have otherwise is a 12cm NEXUS fan on my radiator blowing air out the back of the comp.. and 2 8cm NEXUS fans on the front blowing air in the front.. So anyway.. it sounds nice.. fairly quiet.. so I get 3DMark going to test the system out and while it's loading the tests a BIG high pitched squeel comes ringing out for a second or so once or twice during the loading process for the tests... and then also some general ticking and clicking and chirps come from the Power Supply.. I know it's the power supply because if I put my ear right up to the back of the unit or the side of the unit with my case open.. it's definately coming from there.. Another example of it making noise... when I scroll through a webpage.. it makes a faint high pitched noise.. which is really really really annoying. Finally.. a perfect example is that when I turn on DREAMSCENE in Vista Ultimate.. which is using a movie for a background basically.. the Power Supply starts to make a constant ticking noise.. Honestly.. the perfect example of what it sounds like.. which fits perfectly.. is an ooooold movie... ever watch a cartoon or a show that cuts back to what's supposed to be an old time movie .. and it's black and white and grainy and it is ALWAYS accompanied by an old.. you know.. movie projector sorta sound.. from back in the day.. That's what it sounds like... when I pause the background.. it stops.. when I start it up.. it starts.. The only time it's quiet is when I'm on the desktop doing nothing with the background paused.. and SOMETIMES... if I'm playing a game and the system heats up and the fan goes to full blast.. it sounds ok sometimes then as well.. But most of the time.. it's making a lot of various noises under various conditions.. and it's rather annoying.. So basically I'm wondering if this sounds like it's kind of a buggy Power Supply I got and whether a new one I can probably fairly quickly RMA through NCIX.com would have a good chance of fixing it and working better for me! Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted October 30, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted October 30, 2007 Do you have the PSU plugged into a back up UPS or surge protector? If so, try plugging it directly into the wall and see if you are having the same issues. If the problems persist then it should be replaced. nikeportugal
I have it plugged into a surge protecter .. you know.. It's a block that turns 2 outlets into 6.. Well it says SURGE on it anyway so I assume it's a surge protector.... Anyway I thought maybe that was it so I moved my whole setup into my bro's room next door and plugged it directly into an outlet by itself with nothing else connected to the outlet.. and it still made the noises.. I also read something on these forums about somebody switching from using the PCIE connectors.. to using the connectors that came with the 8800GTX .. (2 wires.. each with two 4pin connectors on one end and a PCI-E on the other) When I did that the computer wouldn't start up at all.. the led's would just quickly flash for split second .. I went back to using the PCI-E connectors and it starts up... well.. it BEGINS to start up... stops.. then a second or so later it starts back up again for good.. Hope that sheds more light on it.. I figured.. heck if I can get a Xpress RMA from NCIX and it fixes it.. that's better than the thing annoying me all the time.. let me know what you think. Many Thanks RAMGUY! 8) Ricardo
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted October 30, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted October 30, 2007 I would recommend getting it replaced. If you have any issues with NCIX.com replacing it, let me know and we can replace it for you.
nikeportugal
Ok great 8) Thanks very much for the input. I'll give them a call tomorrow and shouldn't have to many problems getting one RMA'd with them. If I do I'll surely let you know and either way I'll post again with the results of trying a new PSU in the system. Many Thanks, Ricardo
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted October 31, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted October 31, 2007 No problem, let us know how it turns out!
nikeportugal
Hello again, Well unfortunately I got a new PSU in today and I'm still having the same problems. The sounds are definately coming from the PSU though so I'm wondering what the heck is going on. I would love to test it outside the case and all that but I just put the system together and it's liquid cooled so it would be a GIANT and further aggrevation to try to get it all working outside the case.. I mean.. it could be done but not as easily as a normal system. In a way I wonder if the VERY high pitched noises could be coming from something else.. maybe the GFX card?? But then again I am liquid cooling the GFX card so it would be difficult for it to make high pitched noises with no fans or anything wouldn't it? Anyway I'm 90% sure all noises are coming from the PSU.. my cables are all over the place now so it's hard to listen TOO closely to the gfx card for example.. but the chances are slim that it's that anyway. So yeah, I'm not sure what to do at this point.. just .. frustrated.. :...::dunno::thinking::wtfeh:
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 2, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 2, 2007 I would recommend testing the PSU in a different system if possible, if 2 PSUs are doing the same thing there may be an issue with the motherboard or a compatibility issue with our PSU. Can you tell me what ATX 12v spec the board supports (should be in the motherboard manual in the specifications summary under "Power requirements")? nikeportugal
It doesn't really have a power section in the summary but when you look further through the manual it says "for a fully configured system, we recommend that you use a power supply unit that complies with ATX 12V Specification 2.0 (or later version) and provides a minimum power of 400W" The MOBO is an Asus P5K Premim "Black Pearl Edition" in case any of that helps you. I just find it odd that things like ... scrolling my mouse wheel will cause it to make noise.. starting dreamscene up... It makes more sense for it to make noise I suppose when I'm starting a game up.. that's when it's the most audible obviously.. Is it possible at all that NCIX got a bad batch and sending me 2 PSU units quickly would result in me getting 2 bad apples?? I dunno.. .. well.. anyway .. I don't really have another system i can test the PSU on.. I'll see if I can figure something out maybe.. :[pouts:
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 2, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 2, 2007 Can you tell me which revision of your motherboad you have?
nikeportugal
It looks like Rev 2 . 00G but the G could be a 6 or everything after 2 is not part of the Rev. But at least we know it's at least Rev 2 at the least :sigh!:
nikeportugal
Maybe it's my GFX card after all?? I dunno.. it's definately the loudest when I put my ear up to the back of the PSU .. but these guys seem to have very similar problems which is hard to ignore.. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/215434-33-strange-noise-coming-8800 Unfortunately I liquid cool my system and had to install my own EK waterblock on the card and remove the stock cooling from it so I doubt I could RMA even if I wanted to.. not that it would necissarily help since it seems like many have tried new cards with same problems... That's the only suspicious thing to me.. if it is the card.. getting a new one didn't fix it... you would think it's something else.. Sort of like now with the PSU .. I got a new one.. and the noise is still there.. so decent chance that it's not your PSU unit right??
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 2, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 2, 2007 If a replacement PSU is doing the same thing as the first, then there is a good chance that the PSU was not causing it. The only thing to do to be sure, would be to test the PSU in a known working system.
