SugaCookie
Im not very new to computer, but very new to the art of overclocking. I just always assembled and left stock. I just recently build a new computer consisting of: Intel Core 2 Duo 6850 EVGA 122-ck-nf68.A2 motherboard (chipset 680i) Bios v.6.00pg 4 Gigs Corsair Pc8500 MSI 8800 GTX I have noticed that my expensive memory is not operating at it's stated speed and have read not to enable SLI memory, but overclock it manually. I have read a few post about overclocking a E6600, but still don't truly understand it. Hope someone will be able to guide me through the process, Air cooling on everything. Thanks in advanced! -Da Cookie-
DerekT
Because you are populating all four banks with DRAM you will have to run them a speed bin lower than their dual kit speed settings. This is an issue with the on motherboard memory controller. It can not keep up to the full rated speed of the DRAM because it now has twice the que to retrieve the data. Thus your 8500C5 will have to be run at 800Mhz to achieve stability. Now, you can, by overclocking, gain some of that lost throughput back. When you overclock the FSB, you also overclock the Memory Controller Hub (MCH/Northbridge) and now the faster Memory Controller can retrieve at a faster rate. You will very likely not be able to make the full 1066Mhz but you can very likely make 900Mhz or so. Possibly more but only testing will prove that out. Please post the exact model and version (1.xx or 2.xx) of the DRAM. Please post the cooler you are using for the CPU.
SugaCookie
I'm using the stock CPU cooler, also the Dram are V.1.2 QUAD2X4096-8500C5DF
DerekT
I would not advise an overclock of over 3.0 - 3.2Ghz with the stock cooler. And this depends on the CPU as some will run rather hot. Can you purchase an aftermarket cooler such as the Tuniq Tower or the Ultra Extreme 120?
SugaCookie
As of right now, Stock CPU speed is 3.0 Ghz, I would prefer not to need to purchase a new CPU cooler, but if system Temps are to High i definitely will. So in order to get a 1:1 ratio, and get better performance out of the memory i need to overclock it a lot. :[pouts: -Thanks for the quick responses!-
DerekT
Your CPU is already quite fast. On very good air, 3.6GHz is a high overclock. Now if you had a 2.4Ghz CPU, then 3.0 - 3.2 is about the best on a stock cooler. You are already close to there so let's look at your CPU VID and temps. Download CoreTemp Here Download Prime95 Here Please tell me what your core temperatures are and what your VID is. You will find this information from Core Temp. Edit: Do you have a messenger? If so, pm me with your messenger ID.
SugaCookie
CoreTemp wouldn't work kept coming up with Errors. Prime95 works fin except i don,t know how to use it.
DerekT
You must set Core Temp to run as Administrator in Vista.
SugaCookie
Ok i got Core Temp working (Thanks DerekT)... My Temps are quite high, highest I've ever seen. Core#0 - 50c idle while using prime95 70c (Yikes!) Core#2 - 48c idle while useinf prime95 70c (Yikes!) VID- 1.35 v Maybe its because I'm used to AMD processors, but does this seem high? Whats was the name of the Cooler you recommended, I think ill purchase it after seeing my temps!
DerekT
Those are normal for that stock cooler at load. Idle is warmer but the E6850 is a 333Mhz Part running at 3.0Ghz. Thermalright Ultra Extreme 120. You need to get a fan to go with it as well. You will be seeing idles in the 35C and loads in the 55C http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r198/Battle_Rattle/P1010154.jpg
SugaCookie
I think im going to water cool my computer, i was looking at the zalman reserator xt? What are your thoughts on that? Or do you recommend something different.. Limit about 500 bucks.. prefer less though..
DerekT
The reviews and specs are certainly nice. It looks nice as well. It runs very quiet it also seems which is an important factor with water. Keep in mind that if you use a w/c solution, you will need some air movement over the mainboard since the CPU cooler does move air around pretty well. It creates much of the flow. It looks like it can easily do double duty with the Vid as well. The GPU idle at 39C on an 8800 ULtra and E6600 cores at 30C idle. Seems decent enough.
