1gb Module

I have a problem, Well a few actually. I have been having problems with my computer for a while now, not serious but when I boot up i am sometimes greeted by:

Winlogon.exe application error

The instruction at xxxxxxxxxx referenced memory at xxxxxxxxxx the memory could not be "written".

It only happens occasionally and when it does it auto reboots then i get error again then it reboots again and i dont get it. Very strange pattern. But once im logged in i dont experience any problems thats why i have been able to ignore it for so long. (I had thought it to be zone alarm..) However also I have a problem when im playing Battlefield 2, it sometimes freezes completely within first 5 minutes or in an hour it is very random, sometimes it doesnt freeze at all.

So i got new Ram recently 2GB (2x 1GB kit) same as my 1gb stick which I was experiencing problems on, and I decided to run MemTest84+ I ran it overnight and got the following errors on my 3gb system overnight.

I then this morning decided to run a check on the memory modules, I first ran it on the original 1gb module i bought in different channel slots. I received at least 1 error or more on every test:

Channel B

Channel A

Then I ran the test on the 2gb modules individually in the same slots and received no errors after 2 passes.

I have set the memory to SPD and tried to configure it with 5-5-5-12 and have set it to 800mhz with 1.8v and 1.9v. But still not success :(

my FSB is 266mhz and the ratio is 1 : 1.5

Now I have been very detailed with this but before i send the 1gb back to ebuyer for a replacement I would just like somone to confirm my results that the memory module is defective or if there is something else I have done wrong.

Thank you!

You seem to be getting the same type of error with either module and that would suggest its not the memory that is failing. Can you tell me our modules part# (How To Read the Memory Label) and the make and model of MB you have along with the CPU speed and it’s FSB as well? In addition, please tell me the bios settings you have set for both CPU and memory and any performance settings that you may have set?

Hey, Sorry, I should of been more clear on my analyisis

This was all 3gb modules together running Memtest.

So i got new Ram recently 2GB (2x 1GB kit) same as my 1gb stick which I was experiencing problems on, and I decided to run MemTest84+ I ran it overnight and got the following errors on my 3gb system overnight.

This was the 1GB original module I had before buying the 2GB Kit. I tested it 3 times on its own in different slots (Channel A and B slots) without 2GB kit and got errors in each test. I did this to eliminate possibility it was a bad slot.

Channel B

Channel A

The tests on the 2GB kit dont pull up any errors after 2 Passes, So I am assuming they are fine and I have those running at the moment in Different Channels but continue to get the Winlogon.exe memory problem at startup, so I am thinking it may be software related. I havent tested BF2 as of yet.

My motherboard is MSI 975X Platinum Powerup Edition

FSB running at 266mhz

Multiplyer 9

2.4ghz Intel Core 2 Duo E6600

Memory Frequency Manually set to 800mhz with 1: 1.5 Ratio

Latency, CAS, etc is set to 5-5-5-12, Although it was set to By SPD before but either dont cause any additional problems or fixes.

The parts I have:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/93557 (The one that is potentially faulty)

This module reads

CM2X1024 - 6400

XMS6404v2.1

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/98710

both modules read:

CM2X1024 - 6400 G

XMS6405v5.1

im not sure if the version of anything or even the G has anything to do with it, from what I understand they should be compatible as they are the same type, just the 1gb module is older. I only bought it 4 months ago and the 2gb kit 3 weeks ago approx.

They all say at the side

5-5-5-12

800mhz

1024MB

XMS2 - 6400

800mhz

First thing you should not mix memory with that MB all of the modules should be exactly matched both in part# and revision. In addition, you should have them in pairs so 2 1.0 Gig modules or 4 1 gig modules. or 2 or 4 512 Meg modules.

Have you tried test the modules one at a time with http://www.memtest.org? It looked like you had from the previous results and both modules had errors at the same test and about location which that would suggest some other problem, and I would suggest testing them in another system.

I have tested them all and both modules from the 2gb (2 x 1gb kit) came back with no errors.

Where as the 1gb single module came back with all the ones i have showed you.

Also all the errors where happening before I installed the 2gb, 1gb pair, when I just had the 1gb single module. I am currently running with the 2gb, 1gb pair in different channels but am still receiving problems, I was just playing BF2 and it froze again.

I do understand what you mean though, Since I am dual core it is looking for 2 different bits of ram to work with, and its best not to have odd ones. However I doubt it could cause something this dramatic. Would it be possible for me to buy another single stick 1gb and use it with my current 1gb stick if I get it replaced with ebuyer. I doubt they will give me credit to buy a pair.

Well I ran memtest last night on the 2GB kit with one in channel A and one in Channel B, and this was the result:

Image Here

I received not ONE error after 18 passes. So this is leading me more to believe the single 1GB module may be faulty, However I will try and run the 1GB module with a stick from the 2GB kit, Because you may be right and having only one stick is causing problems.

Is there anything else you can recommend? That are causing memtest to fail on the single 1gb module.

Test them one at a time in the slot closest to the CPU. If one module fails and the others pass, then it is probably a bad module and we would want to get it replaced. If all the modules fail, there is probably some other issue.

Ok, I returned and they confirmed the module was faulty and have given me a refund, which I will most likely use to buy another 2gb (2 x 1gb) kit or 1gb (2 x 512mb)kit, I am not sure my 32bit XP Pro system would be able to handle 4gb because it can only support 4gb and not sure if it includes Graphics Memory and other memory in the system.

Anyways Thanks for your help RamGuy ;):

32-Bit systems can detect 4.0 GB of total memory in the system, which includes the video memory, and also memory which is used on the motherboard for different resources. An average 32-Bit system with 4096MB of memory will detect about 3GB-3.4GB of memory, and less if you have multiple video cards.
