Dell XPS 700 to 720 mobo and memory upgrade

Recommended Posts

I have a Dell motherboard kit that upgrades a XPS 700 to a XPS 720. The memory from the XPS 700 (533MHz) wil not work with the XPS 720 mobo. Dell lists a memory kit consisting of matched 1024Mb Corsair 800MHz sticks that can be overclocked to match the 1066 front side bus speed. I didn't buy them because there was a rebate, and frankly I haven't had the greatest luck with Dell rebates, you get the rebate, but they tend to be slow.

From NewEgg, I bought a Corsair matched set of Dominator CM2X1024-6400C4D memory sticks, version 1.2, lot # 07363303 and a Dominator AirFlow Xtreme Cooling System to install on the Dell XPS 720 mobo. I have 3 questions.

(1) Is this the same model of memory that I would have gotten from Dell?

(2) If not, what is the complete model number for the Dell supplied 2 Gb Corsair P2-6400 memory that will overclock to 1066 MHz?

(3) If this is not the same memory that would have come from Dell, will the Dominator CM2X1024-6400C4D memory sticks, version 1.2 and Dominator Xtreme Cooling System still work with the factory overclock setting of 1066Mhz?

Thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter.

I would suggest getting the memory from DELL in this case, even the memory we make for them is not our standard part and would be built to their spec. So I would suggest just buying their modules to insure compatibility.

Ram Guy,

Thanks for the quick response. If you don't believe it to be incredibly stupid,

I am going to try the Dominator CM2X1024-6400C4D memory sticks, version 1.2 with the Dominator cooling fans first and start with 800MHZ. If that runs well, then I will try the toggle switch setting for 1066MHz and see what happens. If it doesn't work, I'll get the Dell spec 800MHz Dominators as they cost only $212 after rebate and are guaranteed to overclock to 1066.

As a side note, I understand that all of the Version 1.x 6400C4D memory sticks are made using Micron D9 ICs. But I also heard that the Version 1.X was discontinued last year and replaced by Version 2.x using ProMos ICs. Yet the matched set I got from NewEgg showed they were manufactured in the 36th week of 07 with a lot # of 3303. Can you clarify that? Does my matched set really have Micron D9 ICs?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Ram Guy,

Thanks for the information. I guess when you have a Dell, you have to live by Dell rules. Bummer. But at least they were smart enough to use Corsair memory modules and I can still use the Xtreme cooling fan system!

Again, thanks for your help and no need to respond.
