HappyWino Posted October 18, 2007 Author Posted October 18, 2007 Simple question, how in the heck do I increase the memory voltage to the recommended 1.9v? Cheers HW

DerekT Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 This is a job for RamGuy. The Corsair Dram Configurator seems in error as the mainboard spec sheet shows 1.8v non adjustable.

HappyWino Posted October 18, 2007 Author Posted October 18, 2007 Well that is a little frustrating as that is what I consulted before I purchased :| How do I get the attention of this fabled RAMGuy? :)

Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted October 18, 2007 Corsair Employee Posted October 18, 2007 I have asked the configurator team to fix this ASAP and please call our tech support at 800-205-7657 and we will help you.

HappyWino Posted October 20, 2007 Author Posted October 20, 2007 First of all I would like to complement Corsair on their excellent customer service! I talked to customer support as recommended and they were very helpful, apologizing for the mistake on configurator and shipping me the replacement part immediately without waiting for receipt of the incorrect one, bravo! I received the part today (how is that for service!) and installed them in my machine, now I have a different configuration problem :s The specs for the RAM say 5.0-5-5-18 but the highest I can go in the BIOS setup is 5.0-5-5-15. When I allow the BIOS to automatically set these values it uses something else entirely (4.0-4-4-something) even though it says the memory is 5.0-5-5-*. Please advise. Thanks HW
DerekT Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 now I have a different configuration problem :s LOL The specs for the RAM say 5.0-5-5-18 but the highest I can go in the BIOS setup is 5.0-5-5-15. When I allow the BIOS to automatically set these values it uses something else entirely (4.0-4-4-something) even though it says the memory is 5.0-5-5-*. Let the BIOS handle it as that mainboard will do far better on Auto. The lower the numbers of the timings, the faster the system. 4-4-4-12 is a fair bit faster than 5-5-5-15. Your board can not run as fast as the capabilities of the DRAM so it tightens the bandwidth which is a good thing. :) Download memtest from http://www.memtest.org extract and burn the image to an optical disk. Boot to the optical disk and let run for at least 2 passes. Results?
HappyWino Posted October 24, 2007 Author Posted October 24, 2007 After running my machine a couple of days and having several spontaneous reboots I decided it really was time to do as you suggested and run memtest to make sure everything checks out, guess what, it doesn't :( Lots of errors :( Are the details of the errors important? Can I adjust timings to mitigate them or is this second batch of memory just shot or incompatible? I just noticed something else, the part number that was shipped as a replacement (TWIN2X2048-6400C5DHX) is not listed in configurator. Thanks HW
Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted October 24, 2007 Corsair Employee Posted October 24, 2007 Please make sure that you have the latest Bios version and then load setup/optimized defaults and then set the timings manually to the tested settings for the specific module you have, and then test the module/'s one at a time with http://www.memtest.org! If you still get errors, please let me know. In addition, with some MB's (Mostly ASUS) you have to disable legacy USB in the bios when running any memory test.
HappyWino Posted October 24, 2007 Author Posted October 24, 2007 I do have the latest BIOS on the machine but as I stated above, the BIOS doesn't allow me to set 5.0-5-5-18, 5.0-5-5-15 is the closest I can get.
Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted October 24, 2007 Corsair Employee Posted October 24, 2007 That should be fine but set them manually do leave it set to Auto!
HappyWino Posted October 25, 2007 Author Posted October 25, 2007 Good news/bad news :) Good news is that I was able to isolate the problem, bad news is that it is one of the DIMMs that were shipped as a replacement to the first set :(:
Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted October 25, 2007 Corsair Employee Posted October 25, 2007 Sorry about that, please call our customer service and we will take care of that. 888-222-4346 or 510-657-8747 Ext "0".
HappyWino Posted October 30, 2007 Author Posted October 30, 2007 I received replacement modules and not expecting any further issues I put them both in together and fired up memtest...errors :( I will isolate which module has the problem tonight but I have a question... Given that I am not running at 800mhz and I will not be overclocking this RAM, is there a real issue with me taking the two working modules and using them together, even though they didn't come as a pair and are therefore unmatched? Thanks HW
Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted October 30, 2007 Corsair Employee Posted October 30, 2007 Can you call out tech support at 800-205-7657 so we can help you with this?
RJLeong65 Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 HappyWino, Some DDR2-800 (PC2-6400) modules do not like being run at much slower clock speeds than their native 400MHz. (The TWIN2X####-6400 kits, in particular, don't like being run at speeds slower than DDR2-667 speed.) Unfortunately, the Intel 915P chipset's memory controller is limited to only DDR2-533 maximum speed. And Intel's own mid-range motherboards adhere strictly to the reference specifications for memory support and speeds, and don't allow any memory overclocking at all whatsoever. In the D915PBL's case, not only does its BIOS lack memory speed settings above DDR2-533, but the motherboard lacks any provision at all whatsoever to manually set the DIMM voltage; its DIMM voltage is permanently fixed at 1.75V. Thus, you'll have to find memory modules rated by their manufacturers to run at the JEDEC-reference 1.75V-1.8V voltage. The TWIN2X series kits, being part of the XMS2 line, often require a VDIMM setting of at least 2.0V in order to run stably even at stock speeds.
