New CMX512-3200LLPRO Stick Fails Memtest on 2 boards

Recommended Posts

Hi Ramguy and others,

I have 2 machines (which I've built) - an Asus A7N8X-X running the mobile Barton XP 2400+ at 200x11 and more recently, a Biostar TForce 6100-939 running an Athlon 64 3200 (Venice) at stock speed. The Asus board as a pair of Corsair CMX256A-3200C2 modules which run flawlessly @ 2.5-3-3-6 at 2.8 vdimm (no errors on Memtest). The Biostar board has an OCZ (OCZ400512V25) 512m Value Ram chip which also runs flawlessly at 2.5-4-4-8 (again no errors on Memtest). Last week, I purchased a "new" CMX512-3200LLPRO module from Newegg.....for whatever machine it would work best in. Problem is, I cannot get the module(s) to past Memtest in any configuration. Today, I tested the CMX512-3200LLPRO singly, in each board. It always fails test #5 with between 303 to 2048 to scrolling errors. It sometimes fails in tests 4, 7, or 8 as well. I've tried the "Auto/Optimal" performance settings; manual timings of 2-3-2-6, 2.5-3-3-6, and 3-3-3-8, along with varying the Vdimm between 2.6 to 2.9v. I cannot get this module stable. I've ordered another OCZ module for the Biostar, but, I'd really like a compatible (Corsair) module for the A7N8X-X. Should I try and RMA this ? If I do and the part is not faulty; I'm guessing another 3200LLPRO may do exactly the same thing. Please advise.

Thanks

Mark

Dug through the Corsair support last night and this morning on this module. Based on a lab test with a "similar" module CMX512-XL3200PRO and a very similar mainboard [A7N8X-E]; I flashed the bios back to the stock 1010X (had been using trats modded 1010X bios), set the CPU/FSB jumper to 2-3, and placed the module (alone) in DIMM Slot 2 or 3 (tried both). I then ran Memtest Test #5 20 different times with different timings/VDimm combinations. Despite the 2.7/2.75 VDimm spec; this module seems to like lower VDimm. I could not get it error free with anything over 2.6v. The only combination where I was error free on Test 5 was with timings of 2.5-5-5-6 and VDimm of 2.6v. Bumping up the VDimm gave me errors. So, I put the other 2 (CMX256A-3200C2) modules in with it and ran a complete Memtest. Had 4 errors - 2 on Test 5, 2 on Test 7. I give up ! I'm RMA'ing this back to NewEgg. I only hope the CMX512-3200C2PT module I'm looking at is compatible with my 2 3200C2's.

I think you have done well to isolate the issue as you have. Now, as you say, it's a wait and hope game. Mixing and matching DRAM can be problematic and frustrating. It can also work on the first try. It's a bit of a crap shoot.

Good luck and let us know your results...

Well, I ended up RMA'ing the CMX512-3200LLPRO back to New Egg. For a replacement, I went with the CMX512-3200C2PT. If my digging through all the Corsair pdf files was correct; I believe its the same as my 2 CMX256A-3200C2's (which run perfectly in the A7N8X-X at 2.5-3-3-8) plus a platinum colored heat spreader.

Would be interested to hear (but probably won't) whether the 3200LLPRO was defective or just incompatible.

I've never had any issues with the CMX256A-3200C2's (I have 2 of these in the A7N8X-X). They run perfectly at 2.5-3-3-8 (at a 200mHz clock). The problem I had was with the new CMX512-3200LLPRO stick. I never could get it stable at all. I spent most of one day trying various timing/VDimm combinations (21 different combos) with it (alone no other modules) in the A7N8X-X and in my Biostar TForce6100-939. The best I ever got was when it passed Memtest Test #5 at 2.5-5-5-6/VDimm=2.6. I then put the 3200C2's in, ran a pass and got 4 errors - 2 in Test 5, 2 in Test 7. Bumping the VDimm to 2.7 gave me more errors. The 3200C2's pass Memtest for however long you want to run it.

The strange thing with the 3200LLPRO was that increasing VDimm always gave me more errors and it was sensitive to the middle timing numbers (RAS to CAS delay and RAS Precharge).

Anyway, I'm hoping the CMX512-3200C2PT I ordered yesterday will give me better luck.
