andrew_san
I recently assembled a new computer utilizing the ASUS M2N SLI Deluxe motherboard, AMD X2 6000+, and Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400 memory kit. My OS is Vista Business 32bit. I have been experiencing BSODs referencing "Stop 0x0000008E." I updated the BIOS to the latest revision available and manually set the memory to 5-5-5-12-2T, 800mhz, 1.9V which did not fix the issue. I currently have the RAM set at 2.1V, which seems to work better, but I am curious what the underlying problem may be. Thanks for your help. DerekT
System boards can undervolt and this can cause issues with dram refresh strobes. Corsair has a lifetime warranty on 2.1v applied to this DRAM. The higher end memory often needs more voltage.
andrew_san
I thought that they might be needing more voltage. Interestingly though, I still get 0x0000008E BSODs with 2.1v, so I disabled the "Legacy USB Support" in the BIOS and testing each RAM module independently, then together for a number of hours with no errors. What's going on here, am I missing something simple? Corsair's online memory finder says that these DIMMs are compatible.
DerekT
Download memtest from http://www.memtest.org. Test the DRAM modules singly and in dual channel mode. If you mean you tested with memtest both singly and in dual channel for hours with no errors, then I would look to issues external to the DRAM as being problematic. If it is hardware it sounds as though you might have mainboard issues. However, it could be software. Is the installation of Windows fresh? Do you have a copy of Windows XP for testing. Vista is still quite problematic with hardware. If it is not a new installation, you may have a rootkit issue. As a first step you could download and run the (free) Sophos anti rootkit - halfway down the linked page. http://wiki.castlecops.com/Rooting_Out_the_Dangers:_Rootkit_Removal_for_Beginners
