CTD
I have ordered a new rig today, which consists, among other things, of the said Asus P5k-SE and Corsair value select VS2GBKIT667D2 (2x1gb ddr2 667) Unfortunately I learnt afterwards that in the manual of the mobo it states "This motherboard does not support memory modules made up of 128Mb chips" , and the VS2GBKIT667D2 sticks seem to have exactly 128Mb chips. Yet Corsair's page states that the two are compatible http://tools.corsair.com/retailer/product_results.aspx?rid=12402&pid=205147&rec=true&sku=19715 Now I'm dumbfounded, so, will it work or will I have to return the memory and choose sth else ? EDIT: Thanks for the answer :-)
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted October 5, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted October 5, 2007 The MB chipset will not support 128M X 16 IC's and we use 128M X 8 IC's so there is no problem. They will run great in that system.
mikesong
CTD, did it work? I'm also getting an Asus P5K SE and want to get the same RAM. RAM GUY, Are you sure it will work? Because in the manual it doesn't list the Corsair 667 1GB sticks as supported, whereas a few Corsair 800mhz 1gb sticks are supported. If it does work, do you have to configure it manually in the BIOS? Thanks.

EDIT: Thanks for the answer :-) Actually, 128Mb as referred to by Asus refers to the total density of the IC chip, not the depth of the chip (examples of 128Mb chips are 16Mx8 and 8Mx16). What the RAM GUY says is 128M within the IC specs refers to the depth of the chip, not the total density. This means that for a conventional x8 memory configuration, you cannot use any 128MB or smaller modules or double-ranked 256MB modules on this motherboard. By the same token, any compatible 256MB module using an x8 chip configuration must be single-ranked. Modern memory controllers such as the one in the P35 chipset require an IC density of 256Mb or greater in order to work. This is exactly the reason why modern DDR2 modules are made up of 512Mb (64Mx8) or 1Gb (128Mx8) chips. In addition, modern memory controllers don't support any double-ranked module made up of x16 ICs. This means that any memory module using x16 ICs, regardless of IC density, must be single-ranked in order to work. Also, modern memory controllers designed for unbuffered memory are not compatible with any memory module containing more than 18 IC chips regardless of the configuration. And note that "density" refers to the IC density. The so-called "high-density" memory modules actually refer to those modules containing a lot more IC chips than the standard x8-configuration modules. No Intel, AMD/ATi or NVIDIA chipset will work properly with those "high-density" modules because they contain more than 9 pieces of IC per bank. And such modules are not compliant with the official JEDEC memory module specification.
mikesong
RJLeong, thanks, now I understand about the 128Mb. Back to my original questions- CTD, did it work? Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 1, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 1, 2007 They will work fine with that system and they may not have been on the list because we never send out Value Select to any one for Validation. mikesong
Ok, great. It's just strange, because they have several 800mhz Corsair listed as approved - is that not value select? So do you know what voltage or timing, etc., I would need to set for the RAM in the BIOS? I don't know a lot about RAM, but from my research I'm pretty sure that the Asus P5K SE doesn't set up RAM automatically well. So you need to manually configure it, especially modules that aren't listed on their QVL. Thanks for your help.
RJLeong65
Ok, great. It's just strange, because they have several 800mhz Corsair listed as approved - is that not value select? Those DDR2-800 speed Corsair modules are of the XMS2 (TWIN2X) series. Corsair does not currently make Value Select memory in the DDR2-800 speed; the fastest Value Select memory currently available is only DDR2-667. DerekT
Corsair does make Value Select DDR2 800Mhz DRAM. However, it is specifically designed for OEM manufacturers and will not be found in the general retail sales as a stand alone product. mikesong
Thanks, you guys are great. I knew Corsair mem would work either way. Now if I could just decide whether to get the 667, which would give me a 1:1 ratio w/ the 1333 FSB, which I've been told is important with the Core 2 Duo's. Or the 800, which is technically faster and is on Asus' QVL. Any thoughts? Should I not sweat the QVL and go with 667? Thanks.
mikesong
I checked Asus' QVL, and they do qualify the 256mb Value Select DDR2 667, but not any bigger sizes. I assume there are some issues with them. CTD, do they work for you? Thanks...

I assume there are some issues with them. Either that, or (more likely) the larger Value Select DDR2-667 modules have not been tested at all by Asus. CTD
Well, they do work, although I'm experiencing BSOD's from time to time and I'm currently investigating what the cause is, the RAM however passed 16h memtest with 0 errors so I guess it is either CPU L2 cache, VID RAM or the MoBo itself Anyway the RAM itself works, the MoBo boots normally. I checked Asus' QVL, and they do qualify the 256mb Value Select DDR2 667, but not any bigger sizes. I assume there are some issues with them. CTD, do they work for you? Thanks... Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 15, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 15, 2007 If you can catch the stop error code you can check it at http://www.microsoft.com/technet to see if there might be some known problem.
