1 year - still no solution. Short version of the story...

Recommended Posts

System as followed, bought sept. 2006:

Gigabyte P965-DS4

Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 (with Tuniq Tower Cooling)

XMS2 Twins 512x2 6400c5 Kit

Nvidia 7600GS

3x Seagate Drives (7200.9 & 2 7200.10)

Antec Sonata II (with Antec 450W Smartpower)

I haven't experienced this system stable since I bought it - neither with XP Pro or Vista Ultimate. Getting random BSODS and freezes and all kinds of stuff.

First I suspected the CPU, tested it in other systems but it turned out to be fine. Of course suspected the RAM too, ran Memtest for DOS (Bootup mode) for 24h with no problem. Ram seemed ok. Started suspecting the MoBO. Actually got this replaced for a P35-DS4 so that's out of the question. In between this I didn't touch the system because I was abroad. But now I'm back and I'm continuing my diagnosis.

Replaced the PSU (which actually made a high-pitched sound but tested ok with a multi-meter) for the Corsair HX520W, so that should be cool too.

Still not stable.

Ran MEMTEST in Windows for the first time, and guess what, it gives me errors. But totally random, I first ran it for 20 minutes and then got an error than it ran for 2 hours straight with no errors.

It's all so random, but is it still fair to assume that it is the memory that's failed?

I've done all the standard diagnoses like testing one stick and stuff but it is still totally random. That's why I heavily suspected the PSU was sending strange volts or something but as seen above it is not the problem.

Sometimes Orthos runs for hours and hours, other times it stops after one hour or something. Most of the BSODs with windbg says mem corruption. And they are totally random too, sometimes the machine is on 24hours, and sometimes it BSODs after 2. Almost always a different BSOD but I think IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL might be a bit more common than the others.

I am so sick of this and just want to solve it. The system is very good and fits my needs perfectly on paper, but when you turn it on it's always a 50/50 scenario. I've become totally paranoid with CTRL+S in all applications and at least I've gained that sense of security from this debacle =)

Help & input appreciated.

Regards,

Dave

I would really suggest a bigger PSU with the system configuration you gave, but to be sure you don't have a failing module; please make sure that you have the latest Bios version and then load setup/optimized defaults and set the Dim Voltage to 2.0 volts (+.2 Volts W/Giga-Byte) and then set the timings manually to the tested settings for the specific module you have, or if you have Value Select "BY SPD" and then test the module/'s one at a time with http://www.memtest.org! If you still get errors, please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it! However, if you get errors with both modules that would suggest some other problem and I would test them in another system or MB to be sure. In addition, with some MB's (Mostly ASUS) you have to disable legacy USB in the bios when running any memory test.

According to my calculations both 450W and the one I replaced it with (Corsair 520W) should be sufficient. Anyhow, the 520W must be enough because I'm not running SLI or anything like that. No OC either.

I've done the tests but I have yet to raise the volt to 2.0 (since they are specified for 1.9v I never thought that would be a reasonable solution). Will try and see, but as I said above the problem is very random so it might be a while before I know.

Edit: Tested 2v - still errors.

Must be faulty.

If you have not tested them with memtest one at a time, I would definitely recommend it. If both modules give you the same errors there may be some other issue, however if one is passing and one is failing we will want to get them replaced.
