CobraDMX
I currently have an Asus P5W64 WS Professional motherboard with a Corsair 2GB kit in it (2 x 1GB). It's the TwinX XMS2 CAS4 kit, and has been working very well indeed. I would like to upgrade my system to 4GB of RAM. I have read this page: http://www.corsairmemory.com/configurator/product_results.aspx?id=16709 Is it possible just to drop in an identical kit, or do they need to be matched as a "quad" kit as suggested? Thanks for any advice!
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted October 4, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted October 4, 2007 Just match what you have now and when you install four modules on this MB you will need to set the memory frequency at DDR667.
CobraDMX
Thanks for the reply! I didn't realise that I'd have to reduce my memory frequency if I installed 4GB of RAM using 4 x 1GB sticks. It's currently running at DDR2-800, which is 1:1 in-sync with the FSB (400MHz, 1600MHz effective) and it flies. I'm not sure if I'd like to slow the RAM down as a trade-off for having more of it. Thanks again for the advice.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted October 4, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted October 4, 2007 NP Please let me know if you have any more questions! And if you have a 32-Bit O.S. I would just stay with 2 gig of memory for best performance.
CobraDMX
Thanks for your advice, Ram Guy! I currently run Vista x64, so 4GB of RAM shouldn't be any problems. 8) Would it be possible to just confirm that this RAM: http://www.corsairmemory.com/configurator/product_results.aspx?id=16709 (top kit) http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=632574 ...will work? My system stats can be found here: http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc.php?id=249599 The important information is that I will be running these sticks at DDR2-800 (400MHz) but in a 1:1 ratio with the FSB. I don't know if this makes any difference, which is why I'm a little hesitant to go for this RAM until I know for sure. :) Thanks for any advice! Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted October 8, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted October 8, 2007 If you are asking if you can mix these two sets of modules, you are welcome to try anything you like but I would not suggest it. Just use the Twin2x4096-6400C5DHX modules for best performance. If you do decide to try it with all four modules I would suggest setting the memory Voltage to 2.0 Volts and set the memory frequency at DDR667. CobraDMX
Sorry - I should have said that I was going to keep my existing 2GB kit as spare and run the 4GB kit alone. :): Thanks for confirming that the kit will work in my machine with that FSB:RAM ratio. I'll be placing an order for it as soon as my month's pay lands in my account (another 18 minutes)... Many thanks for your advice!

CobraDMX
Sorry - one last thing! This kit isn't listed on the configurator as being compatible but seems to be much the same: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=585085 Is that compatible with the Asus P5W64 WS Pro? It's only a little more expensive, and I think I'd rather buy the slightly cooler-running RAM. :):
