TopGunSF
Anyone have any idea what the max safe temp on the Core 2 Duo is? (E6600, E6700 in particular.) Intel says 60.1C, I know it's safe up to at least 65C. I have a friend who runs his at 85C and doesn't seem to have a problem (on half the cooling system I have), but I'm to much of a pansy to try that without a bit more info. So, any ideas? I've heard of people taking P4's up to 100C with no problem, is the Core 2 Duo capable of anything like that? I'd love to break 4Ghz on my E6700 but I can't get over 3.4GHz stable without breaking 65C. (I'd really rather NOT burn this thing out, I don't wanna have to go out and an E6750, they don't overclock so well... and their expensive...) EDIT: One other question to throw out there. Has anyone ever tried increasing in their NB Core to get a better overclock? On my Striker Extreme I was running unstable at 1333MHz until (I think this is what did it) picked up the NB Core a bit. Does that sound right or should the northbridge not need to be over volted?
sbks
If you want a 24/7 overclock and want your processor to have a reasonable long life, 60s is the upper limit of what you should be at. Most people like keeping their processor in the mid-50s under load. Remember that this temperature is not spread uniformly across the chip. Even at 40 C you may develop heat pockets across the chip where the temperature might exceed 60 C. Just because a system runs fine at a particular temperature doesn't mean your processor isn't suffering some sort of degradation. In the long term, you're likely to run into problems. I don't have much to say for your friend, since I know for a fact that Core 2 Duos have a junction temperature of 85 C. These processors are programmed to automatically shut themselves down the minute they hit 85 C, this feature cannot be disabled under any circumstances. In other words, there's no way you can run a Core 2 at or near 85 C.
TopGunSF
Actually, I've seen a Core 2 hit 128C. Was an E6600. Intel actually replaced it for the guy that owned it because of this (though it was perfectly stable). I'm pretty sure that would have had to have been a bad thermal sensor though, stock cooled with no OC. Does leave the question, which sensor is the thermal shutdown linked to? sbks
It's linked to the core temperature, at least I think it is :o:
