CMX512-3200C2 dual vs. single and mixing them

Recommended Posts

Hello all - I have been using two CMX512-3200C2 (V1.2) 512mb modules since December 2003 and they have been great. I just purchased two more CMX512-3200C2 and they were sealed and new. The issue (if there is one) is that the two new modules are:

CMX512-3200C2 XMS3202v8.1 and CMX512-3200C2 XMS3202v4.1.

SiSoftware Sandra says I have this:

*********************************

Physical/BIOS Memory Banks

DIMM1 (RASL-1 RASL-0) : 512MB DIMM SDRAM double-bank

DIMM2 (RASL-3 RASL-2) : 512MB DIMM SDRAM double-bank

DIMM3 (RASL-5 RASL-4) : 512MB DIMM SDRAM double-bank

DMII4 (RASL-7 RASL-6) : 512MB DIMM SDRAM single-bank

*********************************

Memory Module(s)

Memory Module 1 : Corsair CMX512-3200C2 512MB 16x(32Mx8) DDR-SDRAM PC3200U-2533-600 (CL2.5 up to 200MHz) (CL2 up to 167MHz)

Memory Module 2 : Corsair CMX512-3200C2 512MB 16x(32Mx8) DDR-SDRAM PC3200U-333-650 (CL3 up to 200MHz)

Memory Module 3 : Corsair CMX512-3200C2 512MB 16x(32Mx8) DDR-SDRAM PC3200U-2533-600 (CL2.5 up to 200MHz) (CL2 up to 167MHz)

Memory Module 4 : Corsair CMX512-3200C2 512MB 8x(64Mx8) DDR-SDRAM PC3200U (CL0 up to 200MHz) (CL429496729.1 up to 167MHz) (CL429496728.6 up to 34MHz)

*********************************

I installed the two new modules on Friday evening and they installed fine and my computer shows I have 2gb installed. Well Sunday moring - I was surfing the net and all of a sudden -poof! the computer shut down. Not just a reboot - a complete power shutdown. It rebooted fine and no issues since - but I have been using it too much today (Sunday) either. I see that one is a dual module and one is single module.

So - my question is: are these okay to be paired together? Do I need to exchange the single bank for a dual bank? What cause the sudden power shut-down? It was like a plug was pulled (which it wasn't).

Side note: I just went into mu BIOS and it showed my DDR Clock (Mhz) at 333 instead of 400 where it usually is when I only have my original two CMX512-3200C2. When I take out the two new modules it goes back to 400.

I know you should always buy all memory at one time but due to money at the time I only had the computer built with the original two 512mb. So I bought these two thinking that they were sold in a pair and new - but two different revisions. Is it possible to get the one v4.1 and one 8.1v replaced for two of the same?

Thanks all -

I would not suggest mixing memory with any MB all of the modules should be the same part# and revision. However, if the system just shut off that might suggest a power problem, is your PSU Big enough for 50 Watts just for memory?

Fairly sure yes. These were just purchased new and now I'm not sure what to do. I've tried to place the single sided one in A1 or B1 and I still have issues with speed. I see it changes my channels from 2 channels to 1 channel and it drop my DDR clock speed from 400 to 333. Is it possible to RMA the two back for swap out so they are closer to similar revisions? My main CMX512-3200C2 are v1.2 - I doubt I could find another pair of those but if I had at least the same revision for the new pair. I will post the upper portion of my SANDRA log:

Took everything out that was not needed in your post.

The RMA process will usually test and replace only as needed, in other words the modules you send in will be tested in a MB with the settings set manually at the tested settings, and if they pass they will return them to you. It sounds like one set is an older set made before the Spec for DDR400 was ratified and as such had a PC-2700 SPD as there was no spec for DDR400. You are welcome to submit the RMA but since the modules are different revisions they still may not work. I would suggest contacting our customer service and ask them if they replace all of your modules there is no guarantee they can do that but I would ask.

Just wanted to let you know that thr RMA was approved last week and I sent them out USPS Priority on Wednesday. They tried delivery on Saturday and I seen this message and at 6:30pm EST I still see this message:

Status: Notice Left

We attempted to deliver your item at 9:04 AM on May 19, 2007 in FREMONT, CA 94538 and a notice was left. It can be redelivered or picked up at the Post Office. If the item is unclaimed, it will be returned to the sender. Information, if available, is updated every evening. Please check again later.

Will it get redelivered or picked up or should I make a call so it doesn't get returned?

Thanks for the help.
