starstreak
Ok, I placed a order for the Asus Striker and TWIN2X2048-6400C3DF 2GB. but now that I'm reading things, am I going to have issues? I bought a Intel QX6700. I was hoping to hit 3.0Ghz with that, which most say is possible. Did I buy the wrong chip?
Legend
No issues, even if you OC the CPU you can always run unlinked mode or use a lower DRAM divider if you want to use linked. The C3DF could probably run at 1100MHZ and up if you use CAS 5 as well.
starstreak
Um. OK, since the time of posting I was able to cancel my ram (I hope it did, they said they did.) Anyways, I picked up: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=85027-4 (Corsair XMS2 Dominator TWIN2X2048-9136C5D Memory ) Which was used in: http://www.hothardware.com/articles/QuadCore_Core_2_Extreme__GeForce_8800_GTX_SLI_NF680i_Ultimate_Gaming_Rig/?page=1 (Everything I'm getting is here, except SLI 8800GTX, I'll have only one) Can you tell me in layman's terms what I would need to setup in the striker to raise my CPU from 2.6 to 3.0? I heard the CPU is pretty stable at above 3Ghz+ so I'm just going with 3Ghz.
Legend
Adjust the following: Sli Ready: Disabled Memory Voltage: 2.1v NB Voltage: 1.45v FSB Memory Clock Mode: Unlinked FSB (QDR), MHZ: 1200 MEM (DDR), MHZ: 1142 TCL: 5 TRCD: 5 TRP: 5 TRAS: 15 Command Per Clock: 2 TRC:
starstreak
thank you! I can't wait to try it. I just hope the MB starts up and lets me install windows XP without dloading any of the bios updates. Btw, I heard I can't just stick in the ram at default in the MB, it work work? Do you know? I know, lots of questions!
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted April 27, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted April 27, 2007 You should set the settings Legend gave you before you install and then run http://www.memtest.org to make sure its stable then do the install.
starstreak
I would do a normal (non OC) cpu clock rate and do installation first, then once I know its all cool, do the OC. But the question was, what is normal for this board? I thought I read somewhere that the the montehrboard doesn't default correctly?
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted April 30, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted April 30, 2007 You will need to set the tested settings and voltage and you should do that before you do the Install, there is no better hardware test then the install of the O.S.. At the minimum you would need to set the memory voltage before you start. And yes that us required and normal!
starstreak
Ok, thanks. so the first thing I'm going to do is set the following: Adjust the following: Sli Ready: Disabled Memory Voltage: 2.1v NB Voltage: 1.45v FSB Memory Clock Mode: Unlinked FSB (QDR), MHZ: 1200 MEM (DDR), MHZ: 1142 TCL: 5 TRCD: 5 TRP: 5 TRAS: 15 Command Per Clock: 2 TRC: 28 Now, I've built 3-4 computers, but never really had to mess around with the bios. With the above memory settings, I should be at 3Ghz for the QX6700? If so, what settings do I make it so its at "default" speed? Sorry for all the questions. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted April 30, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted April 30, 2007 I would suggest using the settings that Legend gave you and test the system.
starstreak
I guess i'll fiure it out once i get the items, but for my knowledge the settings that he gave me, sets me up at 3Ghz or default? Or if Legend is stil reading this, can u answer that?
Legend
That sets up at exactly 3GHz if you leave the CPU multiplier at AUto, since the QX6700 uses 10x multiplier.
starstreak
Thanks for all your help! Hey, from what you know. 3Ghz, shouldn't be a hard number to hit, right? I would've bought the qx6800(2.9ghz) but I couldnt find it. So I went with the qx6700 and hoping I can hit the same speeds. :)
Legend
Should be easy as cake.
starstreak
Not going so well. The first thing I did was load in the newest bios from bios. That worked. Next I did all the setting you mentioned. It seems after rebooting, the computer hangs on Detecting IDE or something to that matter. But If I just reboot, it now loads past bios. But it halts in Bios saying there was a problem. Any ideas? Now, I'm loading XP. 1st reboot it makes, of course hangs. I reboot the computer and let it get along with the installation. It does a scandisk on one of my other harddisk. And Crap it find a TONS of errors in indexing. It restores it to another directory or seomthing. I THINK I just lost about 1000 pictures, not porn but it was my family pics from trips. Windows is still loading. I'm contemplating removing the 3 other drives for now just to make sure the system is stable.
starstreak
One thing I noticed is that windows still said I had a 2.67Ghz processor. It didn't pickup I overclocked. I set everything to default. Now the computer reboots without an issue. It looks like I missed something in the setup. Any ideas? I'll try and upload a few of my bios screen to see if you noticed if I missed anything. Btw, those setting you gave. It was only for memory? If so, that didn't do anything for the speed of my system, right? Wasnt there something about clock multipliers or something? COuld that be another reason why the setting failed? I had the ram setup right, but the clock for the CPU wrong so it was unstable?
twiSted1
what i've noticed is that no ones stuff works the same way with the same settings, there are too many variables between cpu, mobo, memory, psu and whatever else you have going on in there. youre going to have to figure out where ur system operates the best while at the same time being the most stable, be prepared to be frustrated but it will be a learning experience LOL it was for me. make sure ur stable at stock speeds before anything else and go slowly from there. have fun
starstreak
Hard part is I'm not sure how to figure out what to set for what speed? Most sites I saw with my setup (I cheated, I bought the same items as those from the sites that did a review) got above 3GHZ without a hiccup. So I don't know what I should be lowering for this to work.
twiSted1
yeah i looked around and see what others were doing and tried their settings to no avail. i couldnt make my FSB stable above 1066mhz until i linked and synched my memory 1:1 . thus i'm stuck at 667mhz with this oc, i havent tried going to 1600 to get 800mnz on the memory cos stuff is finally working well and im tired and dont want a slew of new issues. starstreak
OK, I've done the 3.2Ghz, and all seemed fine. BUT I was told I would blowup (my words) my cpu. :) It seems while I didn't encounter any issues that I know of, the use of nvidiamonitor and pc probeII was wrong. When I was seeing a 75c at 100% cpu usage, I was really getting something like 85c at core using Core Temp v.95. Which is WAY too high? Is it? I didn't know there was a different reading for core temp and cpu temp. Also, I know the GPU on my 8800GTX will hit temps like that, but is that way to high for a CPU? I lowered my OC by using the builtin overclock on the ASUS board for 10%. Which gave me a speed of 2.9Ghz. Which is fine I guess. With that setting I get 75c at 100% cpu usage using core temp. All of this is with the Zalman s9500 cooler.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted May 8, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted May 8, 2007 I would check the Fan and make sure you have good heat sink compound and its properly attached, it should not get that hot with that Fan
starstreak
This was actually a second redo. First time was using the zalman Thermal Grease (zm-stg1). I applied it on both surfaces per the manual. Used it and I got the numbers I first mentioned. I took it off, removed the cpu bracket in case that was causing issues (its actually bent, but I'm still guessing the metal bracket was that way to give a secure fit) and this time used ceramique by atric silver. Followed the direction on that one by applying a thin line and letting the fan spread it out. Thats how I got the next set of numbers in my last post before this. What program do you use to view CPU temp? As I mentioned, using things like the Asus Probe II and NvidiaMonitor, I'm well into being fine. As my highest temp scores are below 70's. Its when I use that cpu core program is where its about 10c higher. so I'm not sure which to belive.
twiSted1
i wouldnt trust NVMonitor or anything other than the bios. i know Nvidia makes it impossible to see temps on 8 series cards without getting N-Tune, yuck, so you dont really have many options. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted May 9, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted May 9, 2007 What does it say in ASUS PC Probe II?
starstreak
In pc probe when I was running 3.2Ghz I got: Tempurature wise I'm seeing: CPU:49c idle (no a/c on in room) GPU:70c idle (no a/c on in room) Running 3dmark06 CPU:72 (peak with no a/c in the room) GPU:82 (peak with no a/c in the room) 3dmark06: 13560 When I used coretemp http://www.thecoolest.zerobrains.com/CoreTemp/ and running @3.2Ghz my idle is 58,55,53,55 (for each core) and at 100% cpu my temp can peak at 83c. This is while PC Probe II says I'm hitting about 72c. So I'm a bit confused which to believe in. I wasn't crashing at 3.2Ghz, but...if I belive PC Probe II, I'm fine. If I belive coretemp, My cpu isn't going to last long.
