Corsair 1GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C5 TwinX (2x512MB) question

Can anyone help with a memory matching question from an unexperianced hardware builder

I have a M2N32-SLi Deluxe motherboard which currently has Corsair 1GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C5 TwinX (2x512MB) in it. However I want to upgrade my memory and was thinking about putting in 2GB (2x1GB) CorsairTwinX XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400C4.

Question is, can you have 2x512mb and 2x1GB in the same motherboard and are these 2 sets of memory compatable?

Cheers in advance!

Not sure. Probably not for two reasons.

[1] Firstly your memory timing is different. In some boards, it might work if you manually set your timing to C5 at 5-5-5-12-2T. This is to allow for your older 512MD dimms to work within tested specs. That also means you are pay for something extra for 2GB of C4 modules that you won't be using.

[2] C4 & C5 modules might use slightly different BoM (Bill of Materials) which means the parts might be different between 2 sets of memory. Check the version numbers on your modules. Higher version doesn't mean better, it just represents a combination of parts used in assembly.

The Bottom Line is... It really depends on your motherboard.

My advice is to take your whole rig into a retail shop and ask them to install and burn test with prime95 for 24-48hr.

Make sure you run 2 instances of Prime95 to fully utilize your dual core CPU before you leave.

When you've gone back to the shop, make sure you are the one who click on "Stop" in Prime95 and see the elapsed time spent on testing.

If okay, you buy. That's quite a lot to ask from a retailer's point of view.

Asus make nicely tested boards in general.

Good luck.
