nobracing
Currently I have 2x pieces of Corsair VS512MB400 (PC3200) in my MSI K8N Neo Platinum. They have a latency of 2.5-3-3-8. My processor is a AMD Athlon 64-bit 3200+. Since I still have one slot open on my mainboard I want to expand my memory to the maximum of 2GB total. Therefore I need a new memory module of 1GB. Considering my current configuration, which memory module should I buy to get the best result? (please take into account that I do not have unlimited money  ). Thanks for the help!!! RJLeong65
With your platform, you should not mix even different sizes of memory in the same system. Your system will likely fail to even POST at all. (In other words, all three memory modules should match each other identically for reliable operation of your system.) In addition, if you fill in all three DIMM slots on your Socket 754 motherboard, you will have to drop your memory speed down to PC2700/DDR333 speed in order to run reliably, due to loading issues on your CPU's memory controller. Thanks for your answer. But does this mean that it isn't wise to upgrade my mem with another module when I want to keep the 2x 512 MB modules I currently have? Or is there a (better) way to upgrade my memory?
RJLeong65
Thanks for your answer. But does this mean that it isn't wise to upgrade my mem with another module when I want to keep the 2x 512 MB modules I currently have? Or is there a (better) way to upgrade my memory? What I said does mean that it isn't wise to fill all three DIMM slots on your motherboard. There are only so many ranks of memory that your CPU's memory controller can handle at the full PC3200/DDR400 speed. In addition, even if you buy a third VS512MB400 module, it likely will not be identical to your two existing modules: Depending on the age of your existing VS512MB400 modules, they will likely be double-ranked - while some of the newer production runs of the VS512MB400 modules are single-ranked. A better way to upgrade your memory would be to find another use for your existing 2x 512 MB modules, and just go with 2x 1 GB modules.
