hamburgbenni
Hello everyone ! First of all, please excuse my bad english, but since i do not know, where else i could go, i am using this option. I know you probably read this a lot and that i should rather use the "search option" but it's a little bit hard for a foreign man :sigh!: I am currently using 1 gig of ram (2x512 Twinx 3200LL) and im looking forward to upgrade to 2 gigs. I do not have the money to buy a new set of 2x1024 rams. Instead, i wanted to buy the exact pair again (already used, but cheap), which means i would use 4x512 Twinx 3200LL on my Asus p4c 800 e-deluxe. Referring to the MB's Memory-controller - would that be a problem ? Im not really into hardware and i'm reading a lot of things which confuse me. Would i loose performance because the Memory-controller is lowering my ram settings when using 4x512 or would i - over all - benefit from my planned upgrade ? Thanks a lot in advance ! hamburgbenni
hamburgbenni
Does no one has any idea ? :[pouts:
Yoxxy
4 dimms causes overclocking problems on most motherboards. It is harder for the memory controller to keep that amount of memory in check. Your best bet is to sell those dimms and save until you are able to purchase 2x 1 gig sticks.
hamburgbenni
Thanks for your reply ! I do not want to overclock - the only thing i wanted to know is, whether the performance increase of the double amount of ram would overweight the lowered settings  Thanks in advance ! Yoxxy
Performance loss would be similiar to adding more memory. Depending on which application you will use. Please list some examples.
hamburgbenni
The applications which would need most of my memory would be games - im not using programs which need that much memory... Would COD2 be a good example ?
DerekT
If you are not overclocking then the only real issue will be that you will lose some memory bandwidth as the Northbridge memory controller has to work harder on memory access and thus the speed needs to drop. You have the 875 Canterwood chipset which is a very robust and able one and should deal with this very well. Very likely you would have to drop from 400Mhz to 333Mhz but this is very doable on that board. I used to have that board and tested it with 4 DIMMS populated with 512MB strips. Mind you there is never a guarantee when matching DRAM, and sometimes one board will do what another board (of the same make and model) will not so it is all somewhat of a dice throw. Good luck if you go this way.
hamburgbenni
First of all, thanks a lot for all your answers ! I guess i should give it a shot (Hopefully the correct expression for an "attempt") an then let you know, whether i succeeded. Regards
