stranded
I ordered the wrong motherboard for my system and waited too long to return it. I need advice on what board to purchase. I am not going to overclock, I just need stability for photoshop work. My components are the following: Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 Corsari CM2X1024-6400 (4 Gig) EVGA 7900 GT KO Video 6 SATA Hard Drives I am interested in the ASUS P5B-VM DO. This has 6 SATA Ports and can use the X6800. ASUS says that the CM2X1024-6400C4 is compatible. (My memory is missing the C4) Also, I cannot find this board on Corsair's website. (The DO is missing.) I am also interested in the latest from Intel, D975XBX2. It also does not show up on the Corsair Website. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I like ASUS and Intel but I am not limited to them. I can pick the ASUS board up local and will not have to wait on shipping. I just do not want to have to buy 4 more GIG of memory to make my system work. Thanks.
DerekT
I personally like the Gigabyte boards. The 965P-S3/DS3/DQ6 are all fine boards. ASUS has decent boards in P5B-E, P5B-Deluxe. 4GB of RAM will necessitate you moving down from your 6400 (800MHz) speeds to 5300 (667MHz).
stranded
I just checked, I can pick up the Gigabyte boards local as well. I can either get the DS3 or the DQ6. I am leaning toward the DQ6. I would have a similar system to yours except my memory is the CM2x1024-6400. Do you think I would have any trouble with my memory? I know I said I was not thinking about overclocking. Do you think it would be possible to overclock this memory, MB, and the intel X6800?
DerekT
Your processor allows for raising and lowering of the multiplier so, yes, there is no doubt in my mind that you will be able to clock this system higher. That's a great processor. Are you using the stock heatsink/fan assembly? Do you have the retail box? If you look at the bar code, you will see the FPO/Batch. Can you post this? Also, can you download Core Temp: http://www.thecoolest.zerobrains.com/CoreTemp/CoreTemp.zip and post a screenshot?
stranded
I have the OEM chip and it is at home. I have ordered the ZALMAN CNPS9500 AT 2 Ball CPU Cooling Fan/Heatsink for the CPU. I am going to stop by tonight and pick up the Gigabyte 965P-DQ6 or DS3 (still debating). I ordered the wrong board last time and got busy and I cannot return it. It is a EVGA NF51. I just hope the memory works. I bought 4 gig in preparation for Vista and Photoshop CS3.
DerekT
4GB at this time is a crapshoot with regards to bandwidth. It can often be an exercise in patience. The BIOS and mainboards show support for 4GB but you will very likely have to drop your DRAM bandwidth throughput in order to achieve 4GB. The BIOS's and mainboards are not yet optimized for 4GB. I would say that you will have to manually enter 667Mhz and 2.1V with two sticks. Then shut down and install the other two sticks. I would not install all four immediately. I would also install on a bench without installing in the case first. It is far easier to move components around on a bench.
stranded
I have decided to get the DQ6. Gigabyte is saying it is now Vista Certified.
stranded
I am going to only load XP until Photoshop CS3 comes out. I may only install two gig of this memory until I load Vista and CS3.
DerekT
That's a very good idea. Please let us know how the install goes. If you decide to overclock, come over to the Enthusiast section and we will help you there. :)
