CORSAIR XMS2 2GB - 1 stick failing..

Hey Ram Guy and others..

Picked up some new parts recently (about a month ago) to put together a new computer. Some parts that may be of interest for figuring this out..

e6600, p5b deluxe, CORSAIR XMS2 2GB TWIN2X2048-6400C4.

I had some initial install troubles that I figured were just some quirks in my new system. Installing windows would hang, and the ocasionaly blue screen. Eventually got windows installed and for the past few weeks have been running fine.

Today I turned my computer on and it would hang after a few minutes. Sometimes it would not boot, sometimes it would work for a bit, then just freeze, forcing me to turn it off via the power button. I figured I would try memtest. First memtest with both sticks revealed thousands of errors. Then I tried one stick at time. One stick would run through memtest fine. The other stick would start building up with errors instantly.

I then tried booting with each stick. The hangs and freezing occured with the one stick, and then with the other stick I was able to play games, go through a couple prime95 tests without hanging etc.

To me it seems one of my sticks is failing on me, but would like your opinions. I purchased it at newegg so could either RMA through them or through Corsair directly.

Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated,

Dan.

For reference, I am adding some links to pictures I took with my phone of memtest running. one shows with both sticks and the other shows with just one stick. I am tried with the 'good' stick, and have shown no errors.

Been playing around some.

The one stick seems to be working fine. left he computer on all night downloading and played some games with it this morning. Left memtest on for an hour and the 'good' stick recorded 11 errors.

The other stick is having troubles getting to bios screen and will not boot the majority of the time.

Ram Guy.

Saw that you replied to some other threads here, wondering if I could go ahead and RMA my ram... or do you have some other ideas?

Have tried no overclocking, adjusted voltage as suggested in other threads. At this point I can rarely boot with my 'bad' stick..

Thanks in advance,

Dan

Can you tell me the make and model of MB you have along with the CPU speed and it’s FSB as well? In addition, please tell me the bios settings you have set for both CPU and memory and any performance settings that you may have set?

Ram Guy.

I am running a Asus P5b Deluxe with a conroe e6600. I have done no overclocking and left everything at default from the get go.

Looking at my bios,

FSB speed is 1066 mhz.

Frequency is 2.4 ghz.

Other settings in bios are default. Like I side before, I have not overclocked in the slightest. An e6600 and 2 gigs of ram is plenty for me. The only adjustments I have made (after problems started occuring), where to disable legacy USB, and adjust voltage to 2.1 for the RAM during MEMTEST.

Either way. I tried booting with the one stick to post this message and ended up not even getting a video signal 2/3 times. The 3rd time I got a signal and then it hung within moments. I swapped sticks and I am back rolling. While memtest shows errors w/ both sticks being used individually, 1 is significantly less then the other. One provides me with stability while the other crashes my system.

I am not a computer guru though I can put parts together and build a computer. I am no where close, nor have the slightest bit of knowledge when it comes to advanced bios settings, timings and voltages and just have done what previous posts have suggested in terms of memtesting on the P5B deluxe.

Thanks in advance, and looking forward to a response,

Hodnik

bumping for the ram guy :D:

This weekend I played around some more trying to single out one bad stick. I have been running pretty darn stable with the one good stick and have left my computer on for nearly 2 days straight running flight sim over night on the one good stick. have had only one BSOD which I am not sure is associated with the stick.

The other stick I still have troubles booting with.. when it does it is unstable and unusable.

Would like to get this guys RMAed. Looking forward to a solution and then I will be buying another set of the this RAM for my friends new computer build.

Thanks in advance,

dan

Thanks very much for the response.

I followed the link to the RMA form and have a question as I have seen a few posts of people filling out the form incorrectly and end up sending 2 sticks and receiving one back.

I plan to send both back to make sure I get 2 working well together.

Under module part number - is that the sets name/number, for instance CORSAIR XMS2 2GB TWIN2X2048-6400C4?

Under Module quantity - if replacing both, is this where I put '2' to ensure I get two back in return?

Thanks and sorry for the confusion,

hodnik

You would submit the RMA request for 1-Twin2x2048-6400C4 and send both modules

So..

--

Module Part Number: Twin2x2048-6400C4

Module Quantity: 1

--

This would mean I am sending the kit of 2 in and receiving a new kit of 2, correct? Sorry if I am making a deal out of this. Don't want anymore down time then I need to endure and just want this to go smoothly.

Thanks in advance and sorry for all the questions - hopefully I won't have to do this again!

On another note - thinking back when I built this system (nearly a month ago) I ran into this problem for only a short time(few days). My system would hang similiarly to the way it is now when installing software or windows for that matter. I never ran memtest though, until a few days ago, nor tried individual sticks or ram. But then the problem dissapeared and until a few days ago was running fine.

I am planning on submitting an RMA tonight, but have you ever seen this before? Where a RAM will not work for a while and then work? Or is this just a sign of bad luck?

Thanks again - your help and services are much appreciated!

Dan
