I think I have a bad stick :(

Hi there,

I live in Brazil.

A friend of mine, who lives in United States, bought me the following memory modules:

CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2x2048-6400C4

As soon as I got the memory installed, my computer started to get random resets. :(:

I tried several BIOS settings, without success.

Then, I found the following thread: http://www.houseofhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52351 (section “Testing parameters for Twinx/XMS2-6400C4). I then adjust the BIOS settings as per instructions, but no success. I still have random resets, especially when gaming.

Then I decided to test the sticks using memtest86+ version 1.65. I made a bootable CD and tested the modules having the following results:

1st test (Two sticks, one in slot 1 and the other in slot 2)

Result: Lots of errors in several tests

2nd test (Two sticks, one in slot 3 and the other in slot 4)

Result: Lots of errors in several tests

3rd test (One stick (lets call this stick “stick A”) in slot 1)

Result: Lots of errors in several tests

4th test (The other stick (lets call this stick “stick B”) in slot 1)

Result: No errors (> than 20 passes)

5th test (Stick A in slot 3)

Result: Lots of errors in several tests

6th test (Stick B in slot 3)

Result: No errors (> than 20 passes)

Then I started to use my machine with only the stick B installed. I have played Flight Simulator X, Far Cry, GTR2, Toca 3, BF 2142 for several days without any glitches. :sunglasse

Yesterday I made the final test: I installed the stick A and load Flight Simulator X. I got a reset after 5 seconds of flying.

My understanding is that the tests are conclusive. The stick A is faulty.

Do you have any suggestion?

Please Change ‘Write to Precharge delay’ in the BIOS (same page as for latencies) from default 10 to 15 and then test the modules again with the Voltage set to 2.1 Volts and the tested settings set manually! Then test with http://www.memtest.org to be sure! And you will need to disable Legacy USB when running any memory test with this MB!

Hi RAM Guy,

Thank you for your help.

I have already tested using the following BIOS settings:

CPU frequency: 266MHz

DRAM frequency: DDR2-800MHz

PCI express frequency: Auto

PCI clock synchronization mode: 33.33

Configure DRAM timing by SPD: Disabled

DRAM CAS# latency: 4

DRAM RAS# to CAS# delay: 4

DRAM RAS# precharge: 4

DRAM RAS# active to precharge: 12

Write to precharge delay: 15

Memory voltage: 2.1

CPU vcore voltage: Auto

I have left all the other BIOS settings as default.

The only setting I have not tried yet was "Disable Legacy USB". So I kept the BIOS settings as above and set the “Legacy USB support” to disabled and started the tests.

1st test (Two sticks at the same time (Stick “A” in slot 1 and stick “B” in slot 2))

Result: Lots of errors in several tests :(:

2nd test (Two sticks at the same time (Stick “A” in slot 3 and stick “B” in slot 4))

Result: Lots of errors in several tests :(:

3rd test (Stick A in slot 1)

Result: Lots of errors in several tests :(:

4th test (Stick B in slot 1)

Result: No errors (> than 8 passes) :):

…and then I went to bed because it was very late…

Any suggestion?

RAM Guy,

I know, I understand why it is always better to send both sticks (especially when talking about matched pairs), however, there are some points I would like to let you know:

1) I work from home, so I really can not afford down time (please notice I’m from Brazil, which means it will take some time to send you the modules and get them back – at least 1 month). If I send only the faulty stick I could keep working meanwhile. If I send both sticks, I would have to buy some replacement DDR2 from local market, but the problem is that...

2) …the DDR2 prices in Brazil are incredible high. I really wouldn’t like to spend big bucks on 512 MB of a generic brand.

3) There is always a chance that the sticks get stuck at the Brazil’s customs. In this case I would have to pay a prohibitive fine. If, instead of one, I have the two sticks stuck there, the situation will get worse.

So, basically I’m asking for your consent to send only the faulty stick. Do you think it is possible?

Thank you

I would encourage you to send both modules so they both match. I would suggest you contact our customer service and see if there is anything they can do to speed it up since you use this for work. 510-657-8747 Ext "0".

Hey Ram Guy,

Ok, I have some (maybe) good news

As I mentioned before, I live in Brazil. But I will be in Concord next month (february) to attend a business meeting. Do you know if it is possible for Corsair to send the sticks to a different address than the "Ship From" address? I have a friend who lives in Walnut Creek and it would be great if I could get the memory there.

I'm thinking about sending the bad memory from Brazil and Corsair sending the good memory to my friend.

Is it Ok for you guys?

Hey Ram Guy,

Hope all is well.

Could you please confirm if the replacement module was already delivered? The destination address is Via Appia, Walnut Creek. Name is "Jay Reso".

I'm sorry, but I don't have the RMA and case number with me now... All the related information are on my business e-mail address. I don't have access to it because I'm on vacancy...

If it was already delivered, could you please give me the tracking number?
