Bad RAM here

Hello, I was told to come here for Corsair warranty info. They need to see this thread as proof of tech support.

Anyway, to be very brief:

1) I have the Corsair TWINX1024-3200C2PT which is a 1gb kit of dual 512s.

2) I have an MSI K7N2 Delta2 Platinum mobo.

3) This mobo is on the Corsair list of compatible boards.

4) My system has worked fine for over a year before this happened.

5) About 4 months ago I started getting BSODs, but only recently the Microsoft error report said they were due to RAM corruption, before it was an unknown error.

6) I ran both the MS RAM tester, and memtest86 for errors, and found none. I ran mt86 overnight and all day with no errors.

7) However, in Windows, when I run another program called memtest (http://hcidesign.com/memtest/) it finds errors within a couple minutes and says my RAM is bad.

8) My BIOS is set to performance/optimized mode and SPD auto detect for RAM, which put my voltage as 2.70, and timings at 3-3-3-8. The recommended timing for this RAM is 2-3-3-6. When I set the timing to recommended, Windows doesn't even get past the statup logo before the system is frozen. It ONLY works at this timing, but with errors and BSODs.

9) I swapped both the two 512s, and one of them has no errors and the other one DOES error! It errors with the Windows tester on one stick, but this same stick does NOT error in memtest86. Only in Windows.

So then, I am thinking I need to send this kit back and have Corsair check it out. Because:

A) Only one stick fails the Windows testing.

B) The system doesn't work at all with recommended timings. And I'd like to run at the correct timings.

Any suggestions? Or can I try to get an RMA?

Thanks for any help.

Can you tell me the speed and FSB of your CPU?

My CPU is an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ Barton. Socket A. FSB is running 400.

I just swapped between the two 512 sticks last night and only one of them fails the Windows memtest. And it also threw a BSOD within an hour. But the other stick has not crashed when installed by itself, nor threw an error with memtest.

It would seem I have one bad stick. But I'm still unsure why I can't run them at the recommended timings.

Someone had mentioned voltage. Right now the BIOS auto-set the voltage to 2.70V with the 3-3-3-8 timing.

If I do have to RMA them, do I send them both or just the one stick?

Thank you

Please load setup defaults and then set these settings and test the modules one at a time with http://www.memtest.org with the modules in slots 2-3.

CPU Freq: 200 MHz

System Performance: User Define

Memory Frequency: 100%

Dim Voltage to 2.7 Volts

Resulting Frequency: 200MHz

Memory Timings: Manual/User Define

SDRAM CAS Latency: 2.5T

SDRAM RAS to CAS Delay (tRCD): 3T

SDRAM Row Precharge (tRP): 3T

SDRAM Active to Precharge Delay (tRAS): 6T

I reset the BIOS to optimized defaults (either that or fail safe). I set the voltage and timing as requested.

I first tested the stick I thought was bad and here is the results from memtest86:

IN SLOT 2

Ran until I had all these errors. About 9 or 10 passes, maybe a couple hours or so of testing:

Test 4, pass 0

Test 6, pass1

Test 4, pass 3

Test 6, pass 3

Test 4, pass 5

Test 4, pass 5

Test 6, pass 7

Test 4, pass 8

Test 4, pass 8

Test 6, pass 9

All errors said it was "error bit" 00000200.

I then moved the RAM to slot 3 and let it run 5 passes or so:

Test 4, pass 0

Test 4, pass 1

Test 4, pass 1

Test 3, pass 4

Test 4, pass 4

Test 4, pass 4

Test 4, pass 5

All on error bit 00000200 again.

Next I tried the second stick of RAM in slot 2. After an hour of testing (3 passes), there are no errors yet.

It would appear I have one bad stick, correct? If I have to RMA, do I ship both sticks, as they were part of a kit.

Thanks for your help, any more ideas?
