Kintama
Hi Ram Guy, This is my first post (first time problem with Corsair ram). I have a home built PC (specs in my profile) that has been running fine since March 06. Today, I lost a ram module. Here is how I determined this, so maybe this will save you some time... First the PC died while in use I got an SVCHost error, then BSoD, then wouldn't reboot with video. I pulled the video card, and I could tell it was trying to reboot, and got as far as the login screen. But my keyboard wasn't working. I disconnected all drives except the boot drive, and got no further on next reboot. I thought it might be Bios at this point. But then I decided to pull out one of the ram sticks and it booted, and I had keyboard use so I blindly typed my login and it continued to boot. I restarted, plugged in my video card again and could see it was fine. I put the stick back in and it died just the same. To be sure it was not the slot, I moved the second stick over to that bad sticks slot and rebooted... it was fine. I put the bad stick back into the second ones slot and it died. Then I tried to put the stick into another slot and it and it booted but froze up just before finishing the windows OS loading. So that's it... I'm pretty sure we got a bad memory stick. I bought it as a pair through Egghead Last Feb. James http://www.JamesStudioGallery.com
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 2, 2007 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 2, 2007 Please set the Dim Voltage to 2.7X volts and then set the timings manually to the tested settings for the specific module you have (Cass 2-3-2-6 with the Rass to Cass set to "3"), and then test the module/modules one at a time with http://www.memtest.org! If you still get errors, please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it! However, if you get errors with both modules that would suggest some other problem and I would test them in another system or MB to be sure. In addition, with this MB you have to disable legacy USB in the bios when running any memory test.
Kintama
Hi Ram Guy, I've done what you said, I got the timings adjusted. They were at 3338. But after the big crash where the monitor went black it "seems" like the bios is back to defaults so maybe this wasn't the timing when it crashed, its the default time... dunno... anyway I fixed that. The USB Legacy issue is not something I can find in the BIOS tho. It's looking like I do not have this feature or its called something else... there are legacy settings I can change but nothing labeled USB. In the USB options I saw nothing regarding this either. I have no floppy on this system to try out the memtest.org program. Is this something that can run in a dos window within windows? Thanks, James
Yellowbeard
You can also burn it to a CD and it will run from DOS, but only in DOS, not within Windows. Can you burn a CD ISO?
Kintama
doh! I didn't think of that. I'll give that a shot. Thanks

Kintama
Well as I suspected, it wouldn't boot to do the test with the bad stick but the good stick ran the test. I didn't assume it wouldn't work since I had to change the memory timing but had a hunch. Ok so, now I need to send this puppy in. an earlier message said to check the link in your signature but since you said to let you know, I'll wait to hear back from you before I do anything. Sorry I been dragging this out, my work schedule is gruesome lately. James

Kintama
Thanks, I filled out the form in the link. How long is the turn around? Not that I'm crippled bad without it, and as you can tell I been too busy to respond quick myself, but I'm curious when to expect it. Thanks much for the help.
