artifact when running dual channel

Recommended Posts

I bought 2 sticks of cmx512-4000pt separately from newegg few days apart and when i run both sticks at the same time i get heavy artifacts when gaming and yet they are fine single stick at a time. same problem persists during 3dmark.

i run them under spec at ddr400 to greatly reduce the artifact problem. I did not OC the system since my ram is screwing up after few ddr500 run boots. however i ran ram/cpu stress tests and everything seemed fine. the problem persists since i upgraded the vid card from 4200 to 6800nu, and no change with different mobos.

everything has been at default auto for a long time. 2.6c, vcore ddrv both auto. performance mode standard, agp/pic freq auto, external freq 200, dram freq 400. timing 3-4-4-8-8. i've set the mem volts manually to 2.75 and there is no improvement.

all those are basically lowest/safest standard settings and that helps reduce artifact with 2 sticks at the same time. 1 stick at a time i can pump it to 250mhz/ddr500 with no issues. When i bought the sticks in 2003 there was slight artifact an i figured it's not worth the trouble so i kept it at ddr400 speed, now it gets worse.

Please make sure that you have the latest bios and then load setup defaults and try these settings.

CPU Freq. 200 MHz

Memory Freq. 200Mhz/400DDR!

Memory Voltage: 2.75 Volts

Memory Timings: Manual/User Define

SDRAM CAS Latency: 3T

SDRAM RAS to CAS Delay (tRCD): 3T

SDRAM Row Precharge (tRP): 3T

SDRAM Active to Precharge Delay (tRAS): 8T

Also this is normally a Video issue so if you have an AGP Video Card I would make sure the AGP Appature is set to 128 Meg as well.

i left the speed at 200/400 and sped timing up to 3-3-3-8. my agp appature is set at 128mb since i bought the board few years back.

artifact spikes are even less now but couple times during 3dmark it flickered black spikes (artifacts), since my ram is rated DDR500 at 3-4-4-8 looks like my chips weren't binned properly or tested as a set. still can't believe 2 sticks of (what used to be) very expensive DDR500s cant run at rated speed.

artifacts remained after i changed vid cards, yet if i only run single stick both vid cards are fine. it's gotta be the ram, it's not running within spec.
