JF103
I had a Twin set of Twin1024-3200C2PT (2x512) on my Abit AN8 motherboard and I just got a single 1 gb stick of CMX1024-3200C2. It won't post in settings other than Auto. Was it not the right ram to get? Does the single stick not work with twin sticks even though the timings are the same (2-3-3-6)? Can I only get another set of twin sticks and use all the dimm slots?
DerekT
Insert one of the 512 sticks and enter the BIOS. Set your BIOS to these DRAM settings. CAS Latency (tCL): 2RAS to CAS Delay (tRCD): 3Row Precharge (tRP): 3Active to Precharge Delay (tRAS): 6 Memory Voltage: 2.7x VoltsAll other settings to defaults or (AUTO) Reboot. JF103
That got me to post, but when I try to load Windows XP, I get a stop error blue screen telling me that my motherboard is not ACPI compliant. It suggests that I either upgrade the BIOS or that I disable this feature by booting the from the Windows cd. I also heard that the RAM stick could be bad. Is that a possible cause? When it booted it said DDR 400 1t is that correct or do I want 2t?
DerekT
Enter your BIOS. Load BIOS Defaults. Set your ram again to the above. Disable APM and Legacy USB support, Reboot. Does the system start?
JF103
I don't see a Legacy USB option and I'm not sure what APM is. I only saw a USB controller option.
DerekT
Please enter your system more completely. Is your motherboard an AN8 as I can not see any ABIT A8N models? Is that the entire model number?
JF103
Yes it's A8N. It's the older one they don't make anymore. ABIT AN8 Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX AMD Motherboard
JF103
Sorry. I mean AN8.
DerekT
In your "Power Management" Section: Set your ACPI Suspend Type to: S1 In your "Integrated Peripherals" Section Under "Onchip PCI Device: Disable USB Mouse Disable USB Keyboard Reboot and retry. JF103
Didn't work. I still get the error message.
DerekT
Have you flashed a new BIOS? If you install the old DRAM does this issue occur?
JF103
No I haven't flashed the BIOS yet. I have my original RAM (Twin 512 sticks) and the single 1 GB Stick in there. I've never flashed a Bios before. Abit said to boot from a floppy but can I use a cd to boot from? Maybe I have to do what it says and reload Windows XP as an upgrade and not install ACPI. I'll still have all my info and hopefully my settings. I won't be able to automatically shut down but maybe I'll still have other settings to turn off the disk or the monitor. Sometimes my power management is finicky anyway and I can't wake up my PC and I have to restart.
DerekT
Remove the single gig stick. Does your system run?
JF103
It was okay with the original twin sticks alone up until the add on if that's what you mean. It's weird how the power management is affected by the adding of new hardware but I've read that this can happen.
JF103
Yeah. I can go back to what I had it works like that.
DerekT
Remove the two 512's. Install the single 1GB. Does it run? I agree, this is strange and rather interesting.
JF103
I think I did that yesterday and it worked. But I can try again if nothing else comes to mind.
DerekT
You might wish to purchase another 1GB stick and sell the 2 X 512MB sticks.
JF103
Yeah. Maybe so. I thought of that. Hopefully that would solve it for sure. The 3 sticks seem compatible and and have the same attributes. I guess I should flash the bios and see how that goes before I think of doing that. DerekT
I think that this is a motherboard issue. Yes, a BIOS flash might well fix this issue. You have one of the first socket 939 boards and it might well be that 1 X 1GB and 2 X 512 issue errors in this BIOS. I would say that is the case and especially so if you insert 1 X 1GB in the first dimm slot and 1 X 512 in the second dimm slot and it fires up. Then it would seem the third slot is issuing errors. I bet that you can singly test all three sticks in Memtest and you will find no issues.
JF103
I have a 512 stick in slot 1, the 1gb stick in slot 2, and another 512 stick in slot 3. One 512 stick is moved, maybe I should put it back.
JF103
I think Windows seems confused or something, like it can't compute a change. The error message sort of seems like it's just a mask for the real problem.
JF103
I got closer. I have 1.5 gb in and Windows just loaded. Like you said to try. Now maybe little switching should do the trick.
DerekT
I think that the issue is three sticks. A BIOS flash may fix this issue or not. I would put the 1 GB stick in slot one and the others in slot 2 and 4.
JF103
I'll try. I had the 512 in slot 1 and the 1gb in slot 2 and it worked. I put a 512 in slot 1 & 2 and a 1gb in slot 3 and it would not post.
