How can I configure the Asus P5B-deluxe to recognize 4GB of Twin2x2048-6400C4?

Ram guy-

I am using two sets of the above memory, Twin2x2048-6400C4 (4 sticks total) in this mobo. My bios version is 0804 from 10/20/06, the most current. I have the timings read from SPD, and I have the memory remapping feature enabled. In the system information, I see 3584 MB ram reported. Has this configuration been tried? And is there any known issue regarding it? I've swapped out ram sticks and so forth, and there doesn't seem to be any problem with the actual hardware. If I turn off the memory remapping function in the bios, the reported ram drops to 3072.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

I am seeing this in the bios. I haven't finished installing the OS yet, it's going now, but it will be XP64. By the way, I have tried to step the frequency of the memory down to 667 and 533 with no change on the detected ram. Let me know if there is any more info I can provide to help.

thanks-

More interesting info to all those who claim that the Asus P5B deluxe won't be able to address a full 4GB ram due to "chipset limitations":

I was looking at the forums for Mu shkin ram, and came across this post on the P5B deluxe:

When I run 4 x 1GB on that board with memory remapping disabled it shows 3072MB at POST. With memory remapping enabled it shows 4096. Once windows boots up it shows 3GB either way in system properties. Do you have a low-end graphics card with turbo cache or equivalent?

[end quote]

so- the bit about the graphics card is irrelevant, the important bit is that ram from this other manufacturer could be recognized at 4096, while the Corsair stuff won't. Curious. I think this puts to bed the arguement that the mobo is by design unable to see the full amount of ram in BIOS.

Any reply, ram guy?

Thanks,

knobbicus

That’s incorrect information!

This MB will see up to 8 Gig of memory but the CPU you have would need to support 64 Bit Extensions or it will behave like a 32 Bit chipset and have the same type of limitations! Check with Intel to see about your CPU. But the MB will not care who made the module thats just totally worng!

The CPU is a E6400. 64-bit. The mobo should not care what RAM is installed, of course. The chipset can address 8GB RAM. The chipset is Intel Express P965, specifically designed for the Core 2 Duo CPU.

And before anyone says the words "Operating System", I'm running Win XP x64. Also, I'm talking about installed RAM that is reported by the BIOS, prior to installation of any operating system.

Let me know if there are any other details needed about this system build to help clarify what I'm observing.

Thanks,

Hey Ram Guy-

we can close this thread. It's now redundant with the other thread started by me on a closely related topic.

Thanks for the help- I guess I'll send this back to Asus, since there seems to be no where else to go pursuing the RAM.

Thanks,

knobbicus
