Best Value RAM for ASUS P5B?

Hi,

I'm going to build a system with a C2D E6400, ASUS P5B M/B, 7900GS video card (maybe 7950gt if I can afford it).

I'm not into overclocking so would a 2GB kit of PC2-4200 Value Select RAM be the best choice for me? I've heard that C2D should be run synchronous, so PC2-5300 VS RAM would only be worth it if I'm overclocking, right?

If I want to squeeze a little extra performance out of the VS PC2-4200, is it safe and reliable to run the timings at 3-3-3-8? What about voltage (at stock and oc speeds)?

Thanks for your help.

Actually, Intel's DDR2 memory controllers are optimized for asynchronous operation, regardless of whether or not you'll be overclocking your processor's FSB. Therefore, you should try to use the fastest memory that's supported by your processor's FSB speed (in this case, you can safely use up to PC2-6400 memory with your "1066MHz" FSB C2D). Unfortunately, there is no PC2-6400 Value Select memory right now; the fastest Value Select memory currently available is PC2-5300.

For the record, your Asus P5B motherboard is based on the Intel P965 chipset.
