night20
Product: TWIN2X2048-6400 (5-5-5-12) Asus P5B Delux (Non-Wifi) Intel E6600 @ 2.4Ghz (Not over clocked) Corsair 620HX Power Supply Problem: System fails Orthos and Prime95 within seconds of starting. With both sticks in the system (1st and 3rd memory slot) memtest has errors immediately, all at 580.0MB. I removed one stick so that only one remained (1st slot), and memtest had errors immediately, all at 290MB. I then swapped RAM sticks and tried the other stick in the 1st slot by itself. With this RAM stick in the system alone I received no memtest errors. Seems one stick is bad, but the other is fine? I've tried varying the RAM timings and voltage (1.8 to 2.1) with no effect. I've also disabled Legacy USB Support. Note: The system does boot into Windows and function, but programs crash frequently and benchmark apps fail within seconds. If this is an RMA issue is it possible for me to return the non-functional RAM stick only? I don't have any substitute memory and returning both sticks would leave me without a system for the entire RMA process. I'm not concerned with the cosmetics of matching numbers, just the functioning. Thank you in advance.
Wired
it's always recommended to RMA both (quantity 1) so that you get MATCHING sticks back.
night20
Really then, the optimum result would be cross shipping. I found a older post that said Corsair did cross ship, but only if the item was paid for by credit card...for which it would then be refunded when mailed back. But, I've also found numerous posts that said Corsair would not cross ship. Does it just depend on who answers the phone? For the premium paid to purchase "tested" memory and the no lack of 2+ week RMA experiences in "Customer Care", finding out I have a defective product appears it maybe the least frustrating part of my month compared to the RMA. Yellowbeard
There are some bios issues with that particular MOBO. Do you have the latest bios loaded? Also, check the settings recommended in THIS THREAD.
night20
Yes. Voltages from 1.80 to 2.1; at .05 volt intervals. I've tried the "5-5-5-15-6-42-3-11-5-14" settings that thread reports to work, as well as your suggested 5-5-5-15-default...and of course default SPD. I do not believe the motherboard is at fault for this. As above, one of the memory sticks clears memtest (by itself) with no errors. The other memory stick fails memtest (by itself) immediately with errors scrolling by all at 290.0MB. I've not been changing bios settings when I swap the RAM sticks. In theory if one stick works fine with the above settings, shouldn't the other? EDIT: Forgot to mention this has occurred with BIOS version 0711 and 0804 (latest). Yellowbeard
Keep in mind that you must disable Legacy USB Support in the bios when running Memtest on ASUS MOBOs. This setting conflicts with Memtest. I agree with your logic on the failure but, I have seen oddities like this that were not the fault of the memory. And, we always try troubleshooting first as that is the fastest way for you to get your system workin if the memory is not the issue. We certainly have no problem replacing a failed module. night20
As above, the USB Legacy Support is disabled. Can you think of anything else that I should try? It seems suspicious that memtest fails, with so many errors the screen scrolls every few seconds, all at the same 290MB memory location (its 580.0MB if both memory sticks are in the system). Note: This begins immediatley on Test #1 and continues through the following tests...literally hundreds of erros within a minute or two. In your opinion is this a symptom of a memory failure or a mobo incompatability?
Yellowbeard
Sorry, I missed it above that you had Legacy USB Support disabled, I need more coffee. If you have 1 DIMM that passes and 1 that fails let's get it replaced. Please use the link below in my signature for "I Think I Have a Bad Part". If you bought them as a TwinX pair please return both DIMMs so that you get a matched and tested pair in return.
night20
Specmike, I'm sorry for not responding yesterday, its been real busy around here. My concern now is regarding the RMA process. I use this computer for work (telecommute) and would be in a real bind if without it for a couple weeks, since I'd need to send both RAM sticks back (TWINX). Right now I'm operating using the one good 1gig stick. I am trying to find out Corsair's cross shipping policy. Even if I need to place a deposit to ensure good faith, I'm open to this. Can you tell me how I would go about this? I went partially though the online RMA forms and didn't see a cross ship option.
