Tj
Hi I'm new :D: I have been running the D875PBZ for quite a while now with first 2 x 512Mb sticks of TwinX3200XL at the auto detect timings and @ 2.725v, then upgraded to an extra 2x 256Mb TwinX3200XL at the same timings and volatge, with no or seemingly no problems whatsoever and now not long after upgrading to 4 x 512Gb sticks of TwinX3200XL in total, to find I now experience an occasional hang at boot...pre-post (this happens at the time the LAN indicator leds should light on my router...ie they don't light up) part#'s being: XMS3208v1.2 0531066-2 and XMS3208v1.2 0503037-1 Could I be advised as whether this configuration will actually work properly and if so at what settings to use/ If not exactly what Ram should I run with to be at 2048 and lowest latency, bearing in mind I like to run the XP Kurnel in RAM :):  D875PBZ P4 3.4Ghz 7800GS+ Gainward X-Fi FPS Twin Raptors 2 RAID/0 @ system Maxtor IDE drive @ page file -dedicated
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 20, 2006 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 20, 2006 What are the settings you have set? I would suggest 2.8 Volts at Cas 2.5-3-3-7 with 4 modules and work you way up from there testing with http://www.memtest.org.
Tj
"S! thank you for the response I was running with default settings as detected by my motherboard BIOS D875PBZ rev 304 BIOS ver P.34 2.725 volts is the max I seem to be able to set my BIOS to. So is it OK to run the XL at the setting/ timings you mentioned?
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 20, 2006 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 20, 2006 Yes just have to try it and I would try the settings at Cas 2.5-3-3-7 and tweak from there for best performance!
Tj
 Ok, I think I got it sussed...correct me if needs be. 2x TwinX XL 512Mb sticks per channel = double sided x 16 devices = :nono: unsupported (Intel site info) ( wasted AUD$353) System running on Per Channel: 1x TwinX XL 512Mb (256bit) double sided - 8x Device + 1x TwinX XL 256Mb (256bit) double sided - 4x Device Timings the board want to put in are 2.0 4 4 8 @ 2.625v (or any voltage for that matter) @ Manual-User Defined or Load Optimal Defaults using Bios Maintenace. I think I understand the available inBIOS timings as Fast/ Medium/ Slow Will try tinkering with the timings :eyebuldge Why does PAT turn off with 1536 of RAM? Yellowbeard
If your MOBO will allow voltage adjustments on the memory, raise the memory voltage to 2.7v to 2.8v. And with 4 DIMMs, you will need to set the memory timings manually to 2.5,3,3,7 or possbly 2.5,4,4,8. And, these modules are made with "by 8" ICs so you have no compatibility issues based on density. Actually, PAT got turned off and the maximum usable timings got looser (higher latency) because you've exceeded the maximum of four banks of memory. With 1536MB of memory made up entirely of the 3200XL modules, you got six banks of memory, since all of the 512MB 3200XL modules are double-sided (remember, there has never been, and will never be, a single-sided 512MB 3200XL module) and all of their 256MB product mates are single-sided. One double-sided stick already equals two banks of memory.
Tj
'K, so if I want to run 2Gb of RAM with this particular board...it should be as 1x 1Gb stick per channel in Bank 0, leaving Bank 1 empty. This will leave PAT enabled...is this correct? (I like the way running with PAT enabled feels, especially when the UtiliseCPUCache switch is enabled in the registry) And I would still have to run with the looser timings of 2.5 3 3 7 or 2.5 4 4 8, or some mix in between, or just run @ SPD Detect? and in any case, crank the voltage up. (I be curious... I look at a 256Mb stick and see 4 chips on either side, is this not double sided?) *edit In the mean time - running 2 x 512 sticks in auto (SPD Detect) mode at 2.725v, PAT Enabled. Memtest86+ v1.65 registers no errors, atm all seems good in the world.
Yellowbeard
Ideally you would need 2 x 1gb DIMMs for best operation and to have PAT enabled. As far as your 256mb DIMM, referring to single sided or double sided does not necessarily refer to the physical layout of the DIMM. It refers to how the system sees the DIMM electrically. Each "side" is referred to as a rank and all of our 256mb DIMMs are single rank or SS. However, the ICs can physically be placed on 1 side of the PCB or on both. The Memory Basics presentation is a good source of information.

Tj
 well the pre POST hang bug thingy came back to haunt again. SOo I lashed out and got a TwinX 2Gb kit and put that in. (Obviously for whatever reason the XL ain't a garna work consistently). Now I be sratching me hed... BIOS SPD detects the kit as 3 3 3 8 (could've been 3 4 4 8) but the specs on the site state 2 3 3 6 Memtest detects the timings as the adjusted timings Kit details: On the halogram sticker CMX1024-3200C2 XMS3202 v1.3 0642311-2 XMS3200 1024Mb 400MHz CL2 Packet ID: N11360 acct 6110300C2 I cranked the BIOS volt setting to 2.725 v and used the MANUAL option to adjust the timings to that stated on the Corsair site. IS this the correct thing to do? Is the SPD programming just to get the system to boot then have the adjusted timings takeover once booted? The voltage you have set is fine and, the settings you have added typically need to be set manually.

Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 19, 2006 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 19, 2006 That sounds like some other issue, will the system let you CNTRL+ALT+DEL out of it? And does it give you a stop error?
Tj
Hi It well could be another issue altogether PSU perhaps? CtrlAltDel doesn't reboot the system but will try it again should the sys. hang, to make sure. No stop errors ever appeared and I'm stuck with a black screen when it does happen. F2 to allow BIOS access doesn't work when the hangs happen either.l
Tj
Got hold of another PSU to try out. I have a funny feeling about some PSU's that have the VGA PCI-e rail separate to the mobo rail. I'll see how this goes

Tj
Yeah, so far - so good. I'm really thinking (with the clarity of 20/20 hindsight) that there well could be something 'not right' with the way the rails (x4) were set out on the PSU I was running with. The PSU I'm using atm, is from the same maker - just the rails (again x4) are set out differently. before had: v1 CPU V2 CPU/ SATA V3 Mobo/ HDD's/ Aux V4 VGA1/ VGA2 Current: V1 CPU V2 CPU/ SATA V3 Mobo/ VGA1/ (AUX from memory, it could be on V4) V4 HDD's/ VGA2 I was thinking there might have an equivalent to a PA (concert) system Earthloop (buzzing) set up causing a problem. Anyways... we'll see how things go for a bit longer from here. Cheers
