earthling
I have an ASUS P4C-800 E Deluxe Mobo & PIV Northwood... with Twinx1024-3200XL. I want to upgrade to 2GB of ram, but now knowing that the Twinx1024-3200XL chips are no longer manufactured, would it be ok to add TWINX1024-3200C2 chips? I know as a rule, that all ram should match the same in timings. What issues would this cause in mixing the 3200XL with 3200C2 chips?
CandyKid
Most directly, you will lose the 2-2-2- latencies of the XL modules for a more modest 2.5-3-3- or 3-3-3- when using all four. Also, since there will be four double-sided DIMM's, your chipset may force you to run at DDR333. This has been overcome by manually setting the frequency back to DDR400, but it sometimes crops up errors. If you want to try it, relax your latencies to 3-4-4-8 (for safety at first) and run the modules with 2.85 or 2.9 volts (over 2.9 voids your warranty). Then run Memtest86+ and check for errors. If none appear, then tighten up the latencies to 3-3-3- and then 2.5-3-3- but I doubt you'll be able to run them at CAS 2, though it's worth a try if you still don't get any errors.
