mixed CMX512-3200

Recommended Posts

I had a stick of XMS3200 v2.1 on an old PC. I upgraded to a Shuttle XPC ST20G5. So I decided to buy a new CMX512-3200 and pair them up. I received a CMX512-3200 XMS3200 v5.2.

If I have both sticks in with auto speed and memory settings, the machine boots with 166Mhz. But if I set to 200Mhz, it does not boot until I remove the v2.1 stick.

So I figure, ok the sticks are different and I could live with 166Mhz.

If I run both sticks at 166Mhz at 2.5-3-3-7-2T at 2.6v, memtest (windows version, no floppy) fails around 70%. If I use 2.7v or 2.8v, if fails sooner. If I try 3-3-3-8-2T, machine won't boot with the v2.1 stick.

I bought the CMX512-3200 XMS3200 v2.1 about two years ago. I figure that 3200 means it can run at 200Mhz in the future. But I guess not.

So I am out of luck with this setup or can I RMA the XMS3200 v2.1 for a stick compatible with the new XMS3200 v5.2.

thanks for the reply, Savage.

I finally got CD iso for memtest+ 1.65 and tested both sticks independently outside of windows. I tested the v2.1 stick at stated 2.5-3-3-2T timings on 2.6, 2.7 and 2.8v at 200Mhz and it failed.

So I will RMA it and hope they give me a more recent version of the stick. I will be buying them paired up in the future to avoid this mess.

Thanks again.
