Gigabyte GA-965P-DQ6 & Corsair TWIN2X2048-8500C5D.

I’m building a system based on Gigabyte’s GA-965P-DQ6 and my intention is to equip it with 4GB of memory. My first choice is to use 2 x TWIN2X2048-8500C5D but after reading some comments around the web as to how this board gets around with this memory I find it almost impossible to decide.


My questions are : a) Is this board compatible with 2 x TWIN2X2048-8500C5D (4 DIMMs) ?, b) what’s the max voltage that can be used with TWIN2X2048-8500C5D without invalidating Corsair’s warranty ?, c) Am I gonna need the CMXAF1 Dominator airflow cooling fan ?, d) Is it possible to get something like 5-5-5-15-2T@2.3V@1066 with 4 DIMMs ? If not, what are the best timings that I should expect ?


Any help will be greatly appreciated.

RAM GUY in the Dominator Qualifications and Testing page it is stated that the Maximum DDR2 recommended VDIMM is 2.2 Volts and since you replied that the board is compatible I take it that your answer is that I can use 4 DIMMs at 2.2V.


Still in a similar thread in the forums ( http://www.houseofhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=54090&highlight=ga-965p-dq6 ) you have posted this reply : << These modules are compatible, but this MB may not let you set the tested voltage of 2.4 Volts and if not they will not be able to run at their tested settings! >>


So you have advised me to have a look at the Dominator Qualifications and Testing page which states that the Maximum DDR2 recommended VDIMM for these modules is 2.2 Volts. On the other thread you have posted that the tested voltage is 2.4V for these modules to run at their tested settings ??!!??!!


You have also mentioned in that post that this board may not let us set a 2.4V VDIMM. According to the boards manual this should not be a problem as the board scales up to 2.575V VDIMM at 0.025V increments over the default 1.8V VDIMM.


What I’m I to believe ? Please do give me a straightforward answer on what the max voltage for this modules is for them to operate at 5-5-5-15-2T@1066 as advertised without invalidating Corsair’s warranty. An answer like this should have been a piece of cake for you people.


And there are more questions that need answers.


I’m not interested in overclocking my cpu. What I’m interested in is operating memory at 1:1 and in the boards manual it is clearly stated that you can set the memory multiplier at x4 when using a 1066 fsb cpu, thus 266 x 4 = 1064. The next lowest speed grade is 266 x 3.33 = 886. Now you are telling me that the board tops at 1030. This is puzzling. Should I believe you or Gigabyte ?


Ref my 4th question, can you please advise on the best timings I should expect with 4 DIMMs on this board ? :cool:

Typo on my part max DDR VDDQ is 2.2 Volts!

Testing parameters for Twinx/XMS2-8500/C5D:

I understand that Corsair tested these modules on the P5B & M2N32-SLI boards in pairs & not 4 DIMMs at the same time. I have also noticed that Corsair has tested the GA-965P-DQ6 with the TWIN2X2048-8500C5 with Gigabyte’s first official BIOS (F2) at 5-5-5-15-2T@1066 - 2.1V – 266 FSB. My understanding is that the TWIN2X2048-8500C5D is the same stuff as the TWIN2X2048-8500C5 with the exception of the Dominator PCB and heatsinks. (Please correct me if I am wrong). If this is the case then I do not expect to have any performance or compatibility issues with just a pair of TWIN2X2048-8500C5D, especially with the latest F7 BIOS.


The thing is that I want to use 4 DIMMs, and normally when you do that, they are somewhat slower than 2. On most occasions you will have to relax the timings or up the VDIMM, or both.


I understand that this board has not been tested with 4 DIMMs. The question is that since I won’t exceed Corsair’s max specs on VDIMM (2.2V), should I expect more relaxed timings than 5-5-5-15-2T@1066, or this memory is so super-cool that will still work as advertised ? :confused:

With this MB I doubt you will get 1066 with 2 modules let alone 4 with 4 modules I would suspect the memory will top out about 900-1000 Mhz on the memory.
