Faulty stick of XMS3200XL PT?

Hi,

I have been using a TwinX matched pair couple of XMS3200XL PT sticks (2 x 512's) of RAM for the past 12 or so months, and out of nowhere Windows XP started to reboot itself and give "Recovered from a serious error" message.

I decided to run memtest86 to see if there were any problems (although i didn't expect there to be - i didn't realise RAM could be working perfectly one minute and be covered in errors the next!), but i ran it anyway and within seconds it was reporting errors all over the place, i couldnt beleive that within ONE minute it had found over 5,000 errors!

I noticed it started at around 568MB (i think) and so i decided to run it with just the first stick (1 x 512) in slot0, which worked perfectly with no errors at all after running for an hour or so. I then put the second stick in all by itself (slot0) and again, after a few seconds memtest had picked up hundreds of errors...

What can i do? I assume ill need to RMA this? I bought it from Overclockers.co.uk which said it had a lifetime warranty, so i hope it is still covered!

Many thanks for your help...:(:

I noticed in another post somebody was asked for some specs, so here are mine:

Mobo: Foxconn NF4 Ultra (Model number NF4UK8AA?)

RAM: 2 x 512 matched pair Corsair TwinX XMS3200XL PT

CPU: AMD64 3500+

Graphics: Nvidia 6600GT

Im not sure how to get the FSB speeds as was asked in another post, but everything is set to stock speeds, i have not overclocked anything in the machine.

Just remembered, when i first setup my machine a while back i ran memtest86 as im incredibly paranoid and wanted to ensure i had some fault free RAM...so whatever has happened it must of very recently developed because my system had been running perfectly before...now it restarts all the time out of nowhere, ususally when its been on for a few minutes and i start doing things!

Hi Ram Guy, thanks for your response.

I havent changed anything in the BIOS apart from boot order etc so not sure where to find these settings! When the machine posts it would say stuff like memory timings are at 2-2-2-5 1T Dual Channel mode, if that helps? CPU settings are just the motherboard defaults, which i will try and have a look at now - but honestly not sure where they are

These modules have a minimum suggested Voltage of 2.75 Volts so I would suggest setting the memory voltage manually to 2.75 Volts and then set the timings manually to the tested settings for the specific module you have, and then test the module/modules one at a time with http://www.memtest.org! If you still get errors, please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it! However, if you get errors with both modules that would suggest some other problem and I would test them in another system or MB to be sure. In addition, with this MB you have to disable legacy USB in the bios when running any memory test.

Ok just looked through the BIOS and everything is just set to "Auto"...come on, this surely doesnt sound like a BIOS problem to you considering i have been using it for months and months with no problems and all of a sudden Windows is rebooting itself after a few minutes when this stick is installed, and memtest says there are errors all over?

Im currently posting on the machine with the one stick that works and all is perfect, its obviously running at 512MB single channel so is slower, but it works as normal! If i were to put the other stick in Windows starts rebooting itself again...

Thanks for your response. I shall set these settings as you mentioned but as i have already run memtest on both sticks and i get errors, then one stick with no errors, then the other stick with thousands of errors - am i right to assume it is definately that stick with the problem and i can RMA? I just quote this forum post number?

Again the modules you have require more voltage than the MB will provide by default and probably why its failing. I would suggest you make sure that you have the latest bios and then load setup defaults and set the Dim Voltage to 2.75 volts and then set the timings manually to the tested settings for the specific module you have, and then test the suspect module be it self with http://www.memtest.org!

Ok RamGuy, i have tried all of the above but am still having the exact same problem with this one stick of RAM when running memtest or Windows etc. It throws up thousands and thousands of errors! :(:

What can i do now? Is it RMA time?

Many thanks for your help :):

Thanks for your help, Ram Guy. Unfortunately my reseller just points me to your RMA form - so i guess ill just fill this out! Have submitted and put the post ID number from these forums into the "extra info" text box.

Again, appreciate your help :):
