DHT Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 I currently have 1GB memory stick with the model number VS1GDS667D2 that is of questionable status. When the memory stick is in a slot of my Macbook Pro (1.83 ghz model) either by itself or with another memory stick module (a 512 mb stick) my system involuntarily restarts about every 20 minutes or so. I went to Frys to purchase another memory stick with the same model number to determine if it is fact the memory stick that is defective. After installing the new memory stick having the same exact model number as the suspected defective stick, I have not experienced a single crash while using the memory stick. The memory stick was purchased in April so I can not return it to the store. Please advise on what I should do. thanks, DHT
DHT Posted October 2, 2006 Author Posted October 2, 2006 I have run my computer all day with then new memory stick and no crashes. I took the new memory stick out, and put the defective stick back in and it crashed again, restarting my computer with no warning. Please advise?
Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted October 2, 2006 Corsair Employee Posted October 2, 2006 Let's get them or it replaced. Please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part! Or *New* Tech Support Express” and we will be happy to replace them or it, please note that you are posting from the forum!
DHT Posted October 2, 2006 Author Posted October 2, 2006 Ok. Only one memory stick is bad, the new one bought recently works fine. I sent an RMA form, so I will look for a response in the near future. Thanks
Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted October 2, 2006 Corsair Employee Posted October 2, 2006 I would encourage you to get them both replaced so they match!
DHT Posted October 2, 2006 Author Posted October 2, 2006 Ok. What are the advantages of having them matched to a greater degree than just having the same model numbers. I am new to the matching concept but would like to find out more. Thanks
DHT Posted October 2, 2006 Author Posted October 2, 2006 Well I conducted some research and saw that Apple states that: "However, if both slots are loaded with an equal amount of RAM (such as two 512MB DIMMs of the same type), you can take advantage of the system's dual-channel memory architecture for an additional performance boost. With a dual-channel memory interface, both banks of SDRAM can be addressed at the same time, enabling MacBook Pro to reach a memory throughput of up to 10.7 GBps." So if I return both 1gb memory sticks to Corsair, even if only one is defective, I would receive two new matched memory sticks. Is the performance increase noticeable or is it a small increase that does not make much of a difference?? Thanks
nordle Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Generally you will see very limited performance, circa 3-6%. However if Corsair is offering to match your modules even though one is in perfect condition and they were bought at different times, go for it! Excellent customer service there Corsair!
Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted October 2, 2006 Corsair Employee Posted October 2, 2006 They should be matched for best performance, but we use more then one Bill of Materials to build these modules so sending both will just help to prevent any problems with miss matched modules.
Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted October 2, 2006 Corsair Employee Posted October 2, 2006 NP Please let us know when you get the new modules.
